I had to pass on a moring tea of custard tartlets the other day because I'm pretty sure that sort of thing is a no-no. I'm sure any custard from a cafe like custard square would be a no-no too.
But what about homemade? (real or from the edmonds packet)

What about the commercial pre-maid one's in the boxes from chiller section?

I think homemade edmonds custard is fine - as long as it was just made (at least, that's the rule I've been following).
I think the rule for the pre-made ones in the supermarket is similar to that for other dairy products, that is, use within a couple of days of opening.

Thats just what I can recall though.

I thought that ANY cold custard was a big no-no. as long as you heat it up to hot it's ok.
I wouldn't eat it from a bakery/deli. but the pre-made ones in the supermarket are ok as long as you heat it up.

You're right stefany (just checked the food safety website) - should be heated to steaming hot before eating - luckily I haven't been having any!

Oops, I ate it whilst pregnant! But then again it was always heated with some sort of pudding so guess it was ok then!

I didn't make any after all as all recipes required custard powder which I don't have (so made chocolate fudge instead )
Good to know though that all custard has to be hot. Can't remember if I've had it cold since being pregnant or not, but won't do it from now on anyway |
