Oh i do know that in auckland there is the teen parenting/pregnancy unit and imagine most main centres would have something similar. They are supposed to do schooling and teach about baby care and stuff and after baby is born they take the babies to school with them as well.

I think that any counselling or phone advice centre would need to be impartial and make sure all the options were covered, not just abortion. And i think they would need to be able to refer people to places like bethany house, or teen parent units.

My concern with using an overseas model would be making sure you have the relevant information for NZ with regards to abortion and adoption laws and you would have to have contact with NZ midwives who deal with specific situations. A phone centre should be availbale to people of all walks of life and would possibley attract not just teen mums but mums of abusive relationships or mums with mental problems or people with no homes and you would need people who would be comfortable discussing all scenarios and offering the correct services for each particular circumstance.

Oops i didnt mean to sound so teen based, its the only area i have any experience in...sorry. Of course their are other woman and other crisis situations to be considered. Though i have to say that would be a massive undertaking - would you want legitimate trained counsellers or volunteers who have done a short training course sort of thing?

Bizzy, i wouldnt want to put teens with teens either - i was more thinking someone who had been there done that but was now older and had their sh*t together but able to relate.

Unfortunately teens distrust anyone not a teen! For some wierd reason they think our advice must be wrong or out of date or something... Glad i'm not a teen anymore but sure not looking forward to having teens! sheesh!!! and i have three!

you make a good point bowie about having trained counsellors or volunteers with basic training.

Oh no...i forgot that anyone not 16 doesnt know what its like, man! Now i feel old. But really good point, i was just that feral at 15/16/17 AND i would have fought my parents tooth and nail had they tried to get me to speak to someone.

You'd have to lure the suckers in!

OP, is there a way you could devise a short survey and actually survey the people you hope to target? Maybe 5 questions with multiple choice answers and a comment box. I say multiple choice because people are more likely to answer them.
