I had the same prob when I had to get my day 2 bloods taken. The majority (if not all) the ladies who advised me said it was the first day you wake up with red blood. I took day 2 bloods with my brown clotty (Sorry TMI) and day 2 of red blood only because my cycles are so weird that i couldnt garentee (sp?) red blood would come. Hope that helps

I think it depends, if you need a tampon count that as day 1 if the brown blood is only spotting don't count it.

Sorry TMI warning - If its only there when you wipe and its brown blood then I would not count that as CD1 (or CD2). I'd say if you need a liner then its only spotting as well. CD1 should always be your first day of a full flow i.e. heavier than spotting.

I take it from the day I start bleeding, thats the day the lining has started to shed therefore its day 1 |

I have also been told from the first day you need a tampon or pad, spotting (esp if brown) could be old blood from ovulation....
If its for the purpose of charting you can always change it in the next day or two if bleeding starts....
