We had our 18 week scan today.. asked the lady to write down the gender so we could look later but she said no in case it was wrong.
Baby had its legs crossed, but she indicated she thought it was a little boy, but wouldn't tell us how sure she was either (didn't show us the bits either, and I'm not sure if any of the scan pictures show the bits)

Pregnancies have been different, first one I didn't have much morning sickness and craved kfc chips, this one I'm still nauseus and gag at the smell of chips or pizza, can only eat salads or juice.

I honestly dont mind, I'm excited and looking forward to a brother for DS, but DP is now in a sulk in bed :( His comment was that he hopes the next one is cuddlier than the one we already have and everything seems so final now. (ouch)

Has anyone paid for a scan to find out the gender? (so we can be a bit more certain) How much did it cost?

I'm pretty sure you can. I'm pretty sure my brother and his wife did - although not to find out the sex - and I think it cost them $70 in Hamilton? If we couldn't have seen, I would have absolutely been tempted to look into it!

Gosh, that is pricey. It is worth asking your midwife if you really want to know before forking out extra money.

My boy who's second is way more cuddly than his sister. A girl doesn't guarantee cuddles. It's more the personality of the child.

I had to drastically different pregnancies - and 2 daughters.
And yeah, non-referred scans are $170 or so here. I got asked to pay it when my GP put the wrong code on the forms for my scan with DD1. Fortunately I requested they ring him for the correct referral instead, which reduced it to $50.

But I agreye with Kels, the personality depends on a lot more than the gender!

With DS we had a 3D scan at 28weeks which didnt need a referral, they were pretty sure of the gender at the 20 week one but got the lady to check to be double sure! That was in Auckland though so no idea if they do they same in other areas

I am having that same problem trying to find out the sex of the baby. They already told me to come back twice for the 20 week scan. Where the radiologist could not tell me the sex of the baby. She was getting really frustrated. So i dont really reccomend the henderson horizontal. I think that is the name of the people. They are pretty frustrating.
Now I am 24 weeks and in aussie. So i will just wait for the surprise because i bet it will cost and arm and leg for a scan here.

Just tell your midwife you are feeling worried, and want another scan to check everything is okay. I am sure she will do you a referral if you insist.

Tashbet, I paid $165 for a 4d scan at 28 weeks when I was in Townsville. I think that is an average price anywhere for an elective scan.
