     Topic: 2nd hand bassinette - mattress options?     Posted: 01 May 2009 at 4:57pm |

I am looking to buy a 2nd hand bassinette from TM, it says it was only used a few times. I feel that I should get a new mattress for it, even though it says that it hasn't been used much.

It's a Cariboo Classic and both Baby Factory and Urban Baby say that the mattresses they have in stock won't fit and they can't get one made. BF did suggest that I just get a Dr Sprott (sp???) cover for it at about $20-something. Para Rubber can cut me a foam mattress to size for about $20-something but then I would need some sort vof cover for it as well as mattress protector etc

What do you think is the best things to do? Are there any other options? I want to decide what I am going to do about the mattress before bidding as will have to take the mattress cost into account as well.
 Thoughts please!!!

We borrowed a cariboo last time and DH picked me up a mattress from baby factory for $25.  The staff had also told us they couldn't get the 'cariboo' mattress so we just took our own measurements and bought a standard mattress that fit.  I think it's a ploy to get you to spend more money.

Yeah, I had seen mattresses on their shelves and assumed that there would be one that fitted.
Have just bought the bassinette so will head into BF and have a look at the matresses they have. Thanks

You can replacement Cariboo matresses from places like the Sleepstore, also Nature Baby stock them.

If you are worried about the mattress being used but you don't want to spend lots of $$ on a new one then you could consider getting one of those plastic mattress covers that stop all the nasty gases from escaping the mattress. However, if the mattress is new, hasn't been stored in a damp place, no mould or mildew it should be ok. Air it in the sunshine for a couple of days, there is nothing like UV light for killing nasty bugs. On the other hand its the chemicals they use to make mattress that give 2nd hand mattresses a greater SIDS risk.

We had a para rubber one cut for Bethany's moses basket cuz the mattress in there originally wasn't working for her (made of wool so she was sweating every time we got her out of bed, poor thing). I just put it inside a pillowcase then made it up like a normal bed/bassinette for her. Worked great! I think that on trademe there's someone who makes mattress protectors to size, maybe you could ask if they'd make a full cover for the foam if you decide to try that? All the best!
