Has anyone else had severe pelvic pain (I'm 25 weeks)? I've had a verbal diagnosis over the phone from a physio, and am still waiting to hear back about an actual appointment as my midwife has referred me. The pain isn't constant, although some days it is excruciating and certain movements are almost unbearable. Does anyone have any suggestions or similar experiences? In fact, does anyone know of a good physio in Auckland who's dealt with this, as if I don't hear from the referral soon then I'll just have to pay and go private otherwise I guess my hopes for a natural birth may go out the window if the pain increases!

most physios will be able to assist you (i have been going privately as the hospital was taking forever to give me an appointment)

have had SPD since 12 wks, it is certainly worse depending upon bubs position

suggest definitely getting a belt (you can buy the smiley belts online or thru a physio or thru some mw's), heat works wonders for me (either wheatbag or my favourite a nice long bath), correct posture for sleeping (ie with a pillow between your legs to even up your hips), when getting out of the car swing both your legs out of the car first and use the door to help get your body out, and definitely sit down to put on clothes shoes etc as it puts less pressure on the joints

a number of people have also had success with acupuncture and/or osteo as well - although definitely go to one who you know has worked well with pregnancy before - Bessie in Mt Eden acupunture is amazing

and having SPD doesn't preclude having a natural birth - my sister had it with 2 of her children and had natural births - in fact her OB said it helped prepare her joints for the work to come and he felt it makes the labour quicker and easier (i'm hoping this is true!)

Oh yeah this brings back memories. Tho last time I got SPD at 32 weeks, much later than the 12 weeks and 25 weeks stated here. I was given a belt by the hospital and sent on my way. It was so painful, I was lucky that I was not working at the time as I could not stay in the same position for long.

Amazing tho that as soon as bubs is born it disappears.

I had SPD with #2. I couldn't walk for a large part of my later pregnancy so feeling your pain
Everything choco said plus with getting out of the car pop a plastic shopping bag on your seat to make it easier to twist.
I found pilates helped abit on the days I could do it though I didn't try til close to week 30 and I'd had SPD since about week 13. I'll be doing it from now this time round!
As for the natural birth I had #2 naturally. I required an epidural but that wasn't coz of the SPD I just had a protracted and tiring labour. GL

I don't have SPD but have had chronic back pain for other reasons most of my pregnancy - am now 31 weeks. I have been going to physio through the hospital which has been good and also doing physio and pilates with Zee at return to form http://returntoform.com/. She is working with me on exercise programmes and has a lot of experience with pre and post natal physio - would definitely recommend her. She's not free at all but if you have insurance you might be able to claim some of it back- depends though as maternity physio is sometimes not covered. Plus the hospital has given me a smiley belt and tens machine which is helping too.

I'm now 39 weeks and have have SPD since about 26 weeks. Like you some days it was manageable and others it's excruciating. It's definitely gotten worse since he's started descending as well!

In Wellington the hospital offer hydrotherapy classes 30 weeks+ which I have found have helped. Also similarly pillow between the legs while sleeping. I also got tubigrip that started at my ribs and went down to my backside which helped for support, but in the end I gave up as it made going to the bathroom an absolute mission and I'm in there every hour as it is.

I was meant to have my physio appt today, but they've cancelled it, so it's now in another 2 weeks! Luckily it's not been too bad this week, fingers crossed it will hold out. Will be interesting to see what the physio suggests though - I'll post again after my appointment!

I'm 29 weeks and while not diagnosed, I'm going to be going to the hospital for physio in the next week or two for severe hip pain. Sometimes a pillow helps and sometime it doesn't. I think I've had hip pain since about 22 weeks, but it's gotten worse in the last two weeks and last night I could barely move when I woke up.

Why does nobody tell us about this kind of thing prior to pregnancy? Did they forget they had it? It makes sleeping a luxury.

I've had this since around 16 weeks.... it sucks....

I have issues with strength in one of my legs now, can't put on pants or anything as I can't lift my leg up without feeling like someone is stabbing me in the groin!!!! Turning over in bed is the worst for me... even though I do the 'knees glued together' it still kills...
Painful to walk also, but that is a manageable pain that I am just used to I guess...
Not looking forward to it getting worse
Looking into smiley belts to help...
