Topic: Subsequent Births after #1 Length of Labour?     Posted: 18 October 2012 at 9:05am |

   Hey
I would love to hear how much your labour times cut down after #1. My first labour was 4 hours, I'm currently pregnant with #2 and everyone keeps telling me that the second one will most likely be faster.
I'm just wondering how much faster other ladies births were?

My first was 6 1/2 hours (45 mins pushing), my second was 1 hour 17 minutes (4 mins pushing).   The first was an induction with syntocinon drip, the second natural.

Luckily my waters broke the night before so we had gone into hospital the next morning to go on the monitor to check bubs doing ok.  If not, I would not have made it to the hospital (25 mins away) as my contractions never felt strong enough or close enough together until the last few minutes.

   Woah! That is fast shellgirl.

Hehe frankie, your odds are looking good :)

I'm so worried that I'll go into labour with DS1 at home and for some reason not be able to get hold of anyone to come and get him! Luckily I live just down the road from my work so I can call on some lovely ladies from there if the need be but SCARY!*edit to say, this scenario is during the day. Night would be fine as DPs parents would be home.

15 hours from first contractions to baby for the first labour, 10 for the second.
At least you know you'll need to get onto finding someone at the first sign of a contraction. Chances are, it will all work out fine.

As a general rule, I think labours get quicker. Not so here but that was for totally different reasons - my body just does not birth babies well, they were both around 48 hours labour and 2 hours pushing. Its hard to judge how things will go as labours are so different woman to woman, baby to baby. Just be prepared for things to be quick but also try to relax and go with the flow - you'll know when things are happening

I had 22 hours with #1 from first contraction until birth 22mins pushing. #2 was 5 hours from waters breaking to birth with 8 mins pushing. #3 was 2 hours from first contraction til birth 8 mins pushing.
So yes it cut down for sure, I have heard that 3rd babies can go like first babies but not in my case.

These times are from when I knew I was in labour to baby being born (add a couple of hours to #1 for a fully retained placenta).
  #1: 23hr #2: 10hr #3: 6hr #4: 4hr

I was very similar to you sweets. My first labour was 5 hours (4 hours labour, 1 hour pushing) and my midwife told me that her rule of thumb was 2nd labours were roughly 1/4 the time of the first. This was a bit concerning as that would have worked out at an hour and we live in the country an hour and 15 minutes away from the birth centre!
Number 2 ended up taking 2 1/2 hours labour and 8 minutes pushing, so we made it on time (we just headed in as soon as I knew things were happening).
I was a bit concerned about the chances of being on my own (with a 2 year old as well) and my midwife was very reassuring about this. She said that if i went into active labour without anyone else there, step one was to call 111, and she showed me the best position to be in if I ended up pushing by myself (key tip: squatting as close to the floor as possible so the baby doesn't have far to fall). I felt a lot better being prepared for the worst, but in the end it wasn't needed. Have a chat toyourmidwife about what to doifyou are concerned about being on your own andeverythinghappening very fast.
  All the best!

Not to scare you, but my second was 10 minutes! First was about seven hours.
If you have had quick births before then I would just have a chat with your midwife about what to do if things happen quickly. Wish we had of done that! In saying that, instinct does kick in to some degree and we managed to deliver our wee one with no medical help. Not something I'd recommend in a hurry but there was no time to call an ambulance until after she arrived.
