   I have just skim read a book (was from the library and had to go back) called 'they are what  you feed them' and is basically about how food additives and also natural foods can cause and effect behaviour issues in children.
 
 I will definitly get this book out again as it has seriously got me thinking... There are foods that literally make my kids bounce form the walls.
 
 I am even thinking about eliminating additives altogether... in a gradual way. 
 
 Just wondering if anyone else has thoughts on this topic?

   I *try* to feed DS organic food, mainly becuase of allergies, but also becuase of all the additives that are in food these days. No wonder so many bubbas have allergies, ezcema etc with all the crap thats in our foods these days!

   Alex LMAO.....This is what I do, if you want any help just ask.
 
 Also check out "Fed up" by Sue Dengate, should be in your library. 
 
 It makes a HUGE difference in your kids if they are set off by additives & preservatives. You can also pin point it down to a group sometimes. ie asthmatics usually have issues with the 200 series preservatives.
 
 Great treat for the kids is Bluebird Thin & crispy chips. No added preservatives in their oil. More expensive ones are Copper Kettles & another bluebird one but the name escapes me. Ready salted only

   We don't have kids yet but we read the list of ingredients on every packet/box/tin. If it has numbers in it or words that aren't food we don't eat it!

 You know how I went to Oz on hols, my friend with 3 kids saw Alia & went wow she's so good now & has cut out all nasty's out of their diet & is rapt how her kids are now. Last time Alia & her daughter absolutely destroyed the little girls bedroom, they were both as bad as each other.

   Oh wow thanks :-) I know for certain that some foods make my kids go nuts in a major way - one that I am aware of is Mc Donalds. It's either the food or something in the Keri Juice but they bounce off the walls and get so alert from the stuff. So obviously there are some additives that cause obvious reactions but there must be so many causing milder reactions that aren't noticable until eliminating them. 
 
 I was even shocked to learn white sugar is processed with chemicals and that raw sugar (most natural form of sugar) has some substantial nutrition - for sugar that is!

   Yes it does - heaps of recipes! I found it quite interesting - it has certainly reopened my interest!!
 
 I told DF last night I will be making several changes that will affect him too and he was cool with that. It actually won't be much of a shock either to be honest. We don't buy fizzy drinks etc but it will effect cooking using flavour bases, ice creams, etc... anything overly processed. 
 
 I imagine there will be a lot of canned foods to avoid too but I will still keep a stockpile for our survival kit that I am still yet to make!!

   Wow thanks for that list, I don't even think about these things    (we don't have fizzy drinks though and DD only drinks milk or water). Have sent the link to DH to print out for me.

   We use the soda stream to make soda    or you can add in your own flavourings. 
 Alia used to bounce off walls after McD's as well & she never had the juice as she reacts to Salicylates (natural food chemical) as well.
 Alex, we've discovered that Cooper can eat stoneground wholemeal flour & not react, god help us with white flour, skin rashes & the nappies    We avoid white products LOL
 For stirfries, use golden syrup and then thickend with cornflour & water YUM. For marinades, golden syrup/garlic/spring onions YUM

   Yeah we did it, mostly, I started when pregnant with S then got better when his allergies came to light and have kept it up. 
 
It's important to remember it's not about missing out on things just doing things different. Like make your own ice blocks with fruit and juice that you know is ok, buy organic yoghurt instead, it's not that much more expensive if you buy big tubs. We still have sweets, we just get the natural confectionary ones and so on (that's the treat they have for doing wees on the potty).
 Also some brands of meal bases/sauces are ok. Dolmio for example took all the crap out of theirs a few years ago and the woolworths select ones are sometimes ok as well, depending you do need to check, their whole range isn't ok.
 Lots of the canned stuff is ok, although I actually worry about the stuff they line the cans with rather than the contents themselves, but I still use tin toms and baked beans and I have some soups as well. Watties do seem pretty good, there soups don't have any additives in, but probably still not as good as home made soup. Tinned fruit always annoys me, if it's fruit salad then it has colours cos they colour the cherries   I mean really do they need to be glowing red!
 I would say make the big changes first and then iron out the little stuff, that's what we did, just slowly building on it, I think if you try to do one big switch all of sudden it can be too hard.
