Topic: Hammock and bedding     Posted: 11 November 2008 at 5:31pm |

I know some people on this forum use/have used a hammock. I've got a NatureSway hammock that I intend to use when our little girl is born (in Febr.). I'm just a bit confused about what kind of bedding to use in it?
 Matrass protector, sheets, blankets????
Any help or ideas here would be very much appreciated.

Also, is it possible to use a motion detector baby monitor in a hammock? I wasn't going to use one, thought I just use a normal baby monitor, but people have been going at me that I really need to use a motion one. But I didn't think you can use them in a hammock.

   Hi Ella,

We have a Nature's Sway hammock and we love it. It was one of our best purchases and Jackson settles SO well in it.

The hammock mattress comes with a sheet. We then swaddle Jackson and then lay a blanket over him, making sure to tuck it right under the mattress. During the day we just swaddle him and put him straight down on the mattress - so no extra bedding (aside from the fitted mattress sheet).

The common motion detectors have to lie on a flat surface, so can't be used in a hammock. However, we use a Respisense monitor and, again, would really recommend it. It can be used in a hammock, as well as in carseat, pram etc. My sister in law also used them for her twin girls and loved it. The best thing is that you don't forget to turn them off, as they are attached to baby.

Here is a link to the Respisense website: http://www.respisense.co.nz/

And a link to the online store you can buy them from in New Zealand: http://www.respisense.co.nz/

I think Baby Star also sell them.

We also have a baby monitor, so all up I think we get some good warning if something went wrong!

You cant use a motion sensor in the hammock as you need a firm base. If you want something like that look into a respisense (it attaches to bubs).

I had mattress protector, but it made her sweat (reflected heat?) so I didnt bother .. and just used a bottom sheet.

I wrapped her in a marino wrap and that was about it.

I didn't use a mattress protector in ours but I did air out the mattress each night as Jack slept in a bassinette then. In Feb I possibly wouldn't use anything and it does get quite cosy in there, otherwise a sheet and maybe a light blanket.

no advice about using a hammock sorry....but I have always just used a normal monitor (instead of a motion one) and I have had no problems.
