Topic: Flying Pregnant     Posted: 01 July 2010 at 3:41pm |

   Hi,
Originally I was going to the UK for Christmas, it was bad enough thinking about flying with a 2 year old, but flying pregnant with a two year old yuck yuck.
Does it depend who you fly with to how pregnant you can fly?
Has anyone flown at about 7 months pregnant?

Depends on the rules for the airline and for travel insurance as to whether you are able to.

you are allowed to fly up to 32 weeks with most airlines. you can fly past that with a doctors cert though so id speak to the airline and check what they say

I flew at 27 weeks and at 32-33 weeks, that was to and from Akl to Brisbane. I was fine, just wore compression socks...Depends on the airline, may need a med certificate. I snuck my belly on under a huuuuuuge jumper lol.

Most airlines will let you fly internationally until 34-36 weeks. It's the travel insurance thats the problem, alot wont insure you past 28 weeks.

I flew to london at 20 weeks and return at 23 weeks. Both times were fine except the flight home my legs were so swollen they hurt
Just also check travel insurance. I think most companies wont cover you past 28 weeks I think.

With Air Nz you can fly up to 36 weeks under 5 hours without medical clearence.. otherwise you need clearence..

Insurance is the worse bit you cant get it.

I am flying to Aussie for christmas & will be 34 weeks but at least that only a 4 hour flight.    Had ticket book before i got pregnant

Good idea on the compression socks didnt think of those might have to invest in some.

This pg I've flown at 21w and 24w - 8hr flights to/from Aussie - and it's been fine. DH and I flew together with our 18mo. I flew with SIA and had a letter from my Obstetrician JIC but the airline wasn't interested at all! In flight staff were lovely though!

Last pg I did the same flights at about 26w which was getting a bit awkward - I couldn't bend forward from sitting position to reach things on the floor!

I have friends who've flown at 34 and 36w to Australia from Asia with no issues, but never asked them re insurance.

One thing I didn't think about before we booked our most recent trip - I couldn't have flown 8hrs with C on my lap on my own. We would have had to buy him his own seat as my tummy us starting to make sitting/holding a toddler for that long a little bit awkward!
