     Topic: Sand for a Sandpit     Posted: 19 December 2011 at 7:36am |

   Where would I get some?
My Mum sent us down an awesome sandpit for DS for Xmas, now all we need is the sand, but I wouldn't have a clue where to get it from.
Would places like Mitre10 or bunnings sell it? Or am I better to find a quarry or something?

We got ours from Mitre ten, they sell it in bags so was nice and easy to transport. We went to a landscape place first but theirs was way more expensive

We got ours from the paver dudes here in Paeroa way cheaper than anywhere else. You could always be real sneaky and pop on down to the beach in the middle of the night and get it for free

We got a big trailer load for around $30 from a quarry place, it's sand for the plaster for our house but the kids enjoy playing in it.

We got sandpit sand from a landscaping/gardening place. They sold things like topsoil and wood chips as well. We got a trailer full. It would have taken many many bags of sand from mitre ten to fill our sandpit up - but if you have a smaller sandpit then I think that would be fine.

I got my sand from Placemakers. It was really fine which is cool for sand toys but not for sandcastles so I topped it up with 2 bags of rough sand from Mitre 10 (you can get fine sand and rough sand - I think the fine sand is used for making concrete).

Ok thanks everyone. I think it will take at least a trailer load, the sandpit is about 1.5mx1.2m, we don't have a tow bar on our car or I probably would have taken a trip to the beach with some shovels

I will do a ring around some local places tomorrow to see what I can come up with.
Funny that mitre 10 etc sell it by the bag full, I though that you'd be able to get trailer loads like you can with stones etc

You could go to Bay Nurseries out past Richmond -that's where I got ours. Tell them the dimensions of your sandpit and they will work out how much you need. I think I got 2 scoops which was a trailer load, and that was enough for a reasonable size sandpit. Do you need a hand with transport? I'm happy to help you - PM me if you want.

Did you know apparently it's illegal to take sand from the river/beach. I'm not 100% sure but that's what I've heard

Nicholls Garden Centre do it by the trailer scoop if you have one in Nelson.
I've heard that too. same as rocks/pebbles and plant leaves/flowers/
we are lucky that DP's parents have a quartz sand quarry on their farm so we have unlimited access to nice white sand thats got crystals in it

Oh I'm so glad I saw this thread - I've been wondering where to get sand, also.  My Dad dug a sandpit for my boy last year but he keeps taking the darn sand out and putting it on the lawn, deck, driveway, so now theres not much sand left!  I need to top it up... :)
