expressing question

Hiya, my darling little girl has managed to take a chunk out of one of my nipples (literally), so my MW recommended expressing on that side so that it can heal. So I got all the gear out, boiled it in water for the 5 minutes, pulled it out, let it dry and off I went. It was all going well till halfway through I noticed these black specks on the inside of my manual pump. I think they came out of my jug when I poured the water into the pot.... So my question is... Is this milk still safe with these black bits in it? They have been sterilised along with everything else, so Iam assuming they would be???? Any help would be great Thanks

No- I would definatly not give baby that milk.

Sorry to threadjack but I have a question about sterlising..do you sterilie just before expressing or do you wash and sterlise after expressing then just use after it has been stored?
I have started doing both ie wash and sterlise after use, then resterlise just before use. Also how do I make sure it is dry as one time there was a speck of what looked like mould...would that be coz not quite dry or coz didn't clean thoroughly enough???

OP, I wouldn't use the milk either. But I would be gutted about throwing it away!

NatsCats - at first, when I was pumping/expressing every 3 hours I would sterilise everything then leave it in the steriliser till I needed it again. I didn't take the lid off after it finished.

Once C came home and I was only expressing a couple of times a day I would sterilise as I went and then put the pump and everything in the same big snaplock box as the bottles and just get it out when I needed it.

I would think the mould is probably that you didn't get it dry enough, but hard to say. I know lots of people here have trouble with mould (with all sorts of things) because of the high humidity/heat. Sounds like you're in a similar climate?

Yes, high humudity here...but how do I get it dry haha! I know that sounds so dumb but all I do is stick it in the microwave steriliser with the water fo 6 minutes...am i supposed to do something else afterwards

My microwave steriliser says that things only remain sterile for 24 hours (without taking the lid off). I just washed everything out after expressing and stored it. When it was needed (or the night before if I was using it first thing in the morning!) I would sterilise everything so it was ready to go.

I would recommend that you should sterilise before use and if you like to sterilise and store then sterilise again before using.
