Topic: 8 week old feeding problems     Posted: 27 June 2010 at 4:32pm |

Hiya, my little girl is just over 8 weeks old now, she has been a fantastic feeder up till last week where she had started being a pain at feeding time. We had to take her to an osteopath on monday as her neck was giving her pain and she refused to feed on my right unless we were lying in bed. We got that fixed and she was great.

Now tho she has started fussing on the right again, has a couple of sucks then pulls off, then has some more, pulls off, cries, sucks, off, cries, gah it just goes on and on. I have winded her, changed her, tried the rugby hold, had her left arm by her side, not by her side, wrapped her, sat her up more.......... the only thing that will work is lying in bed on my left giving her my right boob- So not helpful if you need to go out somewhere and there is no bed, not to mention its bloody uncomfortable.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I really dont want to have to take her back to the osteopath as we dont have the money. As it is its taking over and hour to feed her (normally 20mins), she then gets overtired and wont sleep and its driving me mental! Thanks in advance

So she's A-OK feeding on the left?
Me and DS had feeding issues, him with silent reflux and me with not enough.
Anyhow, he always preferred the right, and I tried and tried to get him to take the left. It didn't go well. I tried pumping to boost supply, different positions. BF ended about 4mths.
Then after all that I was talking to another mum who said her girl only liked her left. She (the mum) ended up with one kate moss and one pamela anderson. It never occurred to her to try and even it up, and her girl was still BF at 1yr. Got me thinking if I had it to do over maybe I shouldn't fight the one side only thing.

Yeah that is true, my right is my superboob. He always aims for that one even if I give him the other one.

I pray that I will even up when I stop feeding!

Yeah she is great on the left, latches on and stays there till she needs burping. I have got enough milk- she is putting on 400gm+ a week, so im not bothered by that. Funny story- after I wrote above she went on the right alright, still popping on and off but we actually got somewhere for a change! Yeah I have heard of people only feeding on one side, the problem is my right boob produces WAY more than my left, and refils way faster as well. Im hoping she will grow out of it soon.....

My left is super boob, nothing I do makes my right equal
Could she have a sore ear? Isn't that how you tell when they don't like one side? Sorry might be wrong on that!

My boy is doing the same thing, Fusses heaps on the left, fine on the right. so I've been trying to keep my supply up by drinking lots and I'm going to make lactation cookies. I think in his case its more of a letdown issue, in that it isn't as fast on the left as the right. If he fusses I'll try him for 10 min on that side then put him on the other side, I'm afraid he's going to do damage with all the pulling on and off. Also then next feed I'll put him on the left side first and try him, also helps to keep my supply up. also if he wakes in the night for a feed I'll put him on that side because he doesn't fuss so much when he's half asleep.
I'm hoping its a stage, Good Luck

Had a similar problem at about 8 weeks - complete fussing at the breast. Rang Plunket and the lactation consultant came and watched me feed. She gave me a heap of info. Turned out it was wind, of all things!!! Just really really tricky wind.,

That might be the problem? I had a really fast let down and had a similar thing with the bobbing on and off. The suggestions I had were to hold a cloth under that side and wait till the initial let down has finished so he wasn't getting such a big gush and to try and lean back as much as possible to slow things down. Might be worth a shot trying those things.

Yeah I was about to suggest let-down too. Perhaps try to hand-express some off first before you latch her on too and then try the things Chelle suggested.
My boy started off not feeding on the right side at all so after a few osteo trips (funded under ACC) we finally got that sorted. Now though, that is his preferred side, and mine too. Weird

Im pretty sure its not wind because if i was to put her on the left breast she would take it no worries and I dont think its the let down as we have never had a problem with it, and she keeps popping on and off before and after my let down, then sits there talking to me and turns her head away from the breast.

Im back off to see the osteo today then off to the doctors and im trying to get in to see a lactation consultant.... so fingers crossed one of the three can help!
