Topic: Room in car after car seat installation     Posted: 15 July 2010 at 12:27pm |

   Hi everyone,

I just installed our new car seat. In theory it's a great car seat but I wonder at the size. We have a pretty big car, a hyundai santa fe but I doubt that after installing the car seat rear facing (in the middle) that my husband will have enough room to put the seat back when he's driving. Is it normal? It's an evenflo symphony 65. Your experience/thoughts would be appreciated

Our Prado 4WD has far less room in the back than my mothers Suzuki SX4 so no not uncommon

We ended up putting it behind the passengers seat who then had to sit a little forward.

We have always put our carseats behind the passenger so that only one person has restricted leg room rather than 2. We could easily put any carseat in the middle rear facing in my current car as the back seat leg space is just so massive

We place ours behind the passenger side too as dp drives and he has his seat so far back he's pretty much sitting in the back iykwim lol

But also dp insists it is there as apparently that's the safest place to put them but when you think about it the driver is more likely to swerve away from themselves if that makes sense
I sit in the back usually behind dp while dd is behind the passenger side, dp is the only tall one in the family really haha

I just installed our new car seat today. Was told that middle was the safest so have it there and so far so good as both driver and passenger can move seats back and forth as much as we like.

The middle is the safest IF it doesnt have a fold down arm rest in the seat... if it does then behind the passenger seat is the next best place

But really, the passenger seat is the safest, because it's very unlikely you will ever have a car on that side of your car unless they are a) pulling out of a side street or b) pulling out of a driveway/carpark....the driver's side is the side that will get any impact in a collision, as that is usually the side that the other car will hit...

We have a Hyundai Getz and our capsule (with base) means the passenger seat is quite far forward. But in DHs company car (Mitsubishi 380) its only forward a little and there is still plenty of leg room in the front.

I think its fairly normal to have to have the seat forward a little.

We have numerous cops, firemen, nurses etc in family, so we've been given THE lecture numerous times, in most fatal collisions it's the front passenger who comes out worse. Not sure why sorry. Two fatal crashes I know of recently where passenger died was because driver had turned right into oncoming traffic. Another they'd slid off icy road & hit tree on left side of car. Anyway, back to OP, yep I think it's fairly normal to have to have the front seats forward a little to fit carseat.

Oh & we're not entirely sure where we'll be putting this bub's Carseat yet, we already have 3 in our estima & ds has a seat-belt height adjuster thing. We have an 8seater so I guess we'll play around once we buy a new seat. Even in our estima we can't put the front seats all the way back with a rf carseat behind it. (But I'm short so it doesn't matter anyway!).

I quite normal .. (in regard to your original q).

Most people put them behind the passenger seat as they technically dont need the legroom the driver requires.

Even in a rangerover the seat is pretty far forward and they are sizeable cars!

   Fair point Kate
Has your hubby tested himself if there is enough room?
