Topic: Wellington eating out     Posted: 17 June 2009 at 2:24pm |

Hi - my lovely DH is taking me to Wellington for a "grown up" weekend in September. It will be our first weekend away without Oli, (nervous and excited?!?!). We are staying in a nice hotel in central Welly and are looking for nice places to eat / drink. We think that we will prob have one flash dinner out, but will need some other options too.....
Any recomendations? Nice secret spots? Good wine drinking places? Cosy bars?
Thanks!

Thanks Kazzle - I have had a look on a couple of eating out sites, but always think that someones "real" experience is better than any review!
(Congrats on Cory btw!)

Dh and I like to go to this resturant - its japanese, oh so yummy, feels healthy but can be really filling too and not overly expensive! We went here for our 1 year anniversary and will prolly go there again this year.

Matterhorn is very cool, quite pricey though. Zibbibo is really nice too, has a bar downstairs which is great for pre-dinner drinks.

If you're looking for an intimate cosy wine bar I can recommend Ponderosa on Blair Street (off Courtenay Place). I love it there!!

If you want flash then Logan Brown is good (it is BYP on a Sunday ) but expensive.

Still flash, but less expensive is Boulcott St Bistro
 yummy
ETA i meant BYO, not BYP!

I also Boulcott St Bistro and Logan Brown - yum yum yum! Maybe for your 'flash' meal?
For a less expensive meal, I love 'Asian fusion'-type places like Chow (Tory St) and Monsoon Poon (Blair St) - although the latter probably isn't so good for a couple, it's more of a big group place. Yes and I agree that Floriditas is good, and Strawberry Fare do amazing desserts.
For a yummy cheap and cheerful meal, I'd head to Satay Village or that noodle house upstairs on the corner of Manners Mall and Cuba St, above the Body Shop - mental blank on the name.
And for lunches, go to a Wholly Bagels cafe or Midland Sushi (Waring Taylor St and Chews Lane) does the yummiest sushi, assuming they're open weekends.
Also agree about going for a cocktail at Ponderosa, or Matterhorn, but TBH I haven't had a drink out in town since DD was born, so that must be over a year ago now, must remedy this!

   Zibibo has FANTASTIC food.

If you want something quiet and intimate but very popular try Tinakori Bistro in Thorndon on the edge of the City centre.

Shed 5 has great food and a Harbour view.

Boulcott Bistro is quaint and has good food (I don't think you can book but you can get a drink at the bar while you wait)

The General Practitioner has good food, it's a pub but has nice dining upstairs.

Good pub food - the Shepherd's Arms in Thorndon on the edge of the City centre (MASSIVE portions!).

Monsoon Poon has a great range and excellent tasting asian food from different countries - very popular.

This might help - the winners of last year's Entertainment Book awards were:

Fine dining - The White House (Oriental Bay), Boulcott Bistro & 88 Restaurant as runners up.

Cafe Dining - Wagamama (sea view), The Tasting Room (you'll need to book) & The General Practioner as runners up.

 Hope that helps!
