Topic: Those who feed to sleep     Posted: 02 September 2010 at 2:28pm |

Since Esme has been able to stand up in her cot day sleeps have been a mission. The last few days she has been asking for a feed just before nap time and has fallen asleep then transferred easily to her cot. I haven't fed to sleep since she was a newborn so this is new to me.

I am happy to feed her to sleep as it is much nicer to put her down without the crying and she wakes happy and usually has a decent sleep. I suspect that daycare has been giving her a bottle before putting her down which has probably contributed to her doing this.
What sort of routine do/did you have at around 10 months? She isn't sleeping through so would be interested to see if your bub did/does when doing this (not that it matters!)
 TIA

DS2 was fed to sleep regularly until he was about 6 months old, then he started wanting to be put to bed drowsy but awake. During night feeds he'd basically feed until he was asleep and then he'd be put back to bed.

He did 3 weeks of 10+ hours overnight at 7 months, then we were back to night feeding. When he was 9 months I decided to night wean him, HUGE mistake, but that's another post entirely. LOL
So between certain hours he'd be automatically fed and the other times we'd try to resettle without feeding first. He was fully night weaned at 11 months.....the night waking continued and a week later he got tonsillitis and once over that the following week stopped sleeping altogether!        He of course refused to be fed to sleep so we just had to deal with it.....thus my reference earlier to night wean being a HUGE mistake. LOL
So in our case feeding to sleep didn't really have an impact on how long he slept, and 6 nights out of 7 he'd wake regularly even if he was fed to sleep in the night.
Don't let that put you off though. hehehehehe If you are happy to do it then just do it.

Thanks as it is working I'm not planning on changing it any time soon! I just found it strange that she's gone from self settling for day sleeps and when she first goes down at night to wanting to feed to sleep at 10 months.
As for night feeds, I can't be bothered resettling unless it's been less than 2 hours or I am still up. She generally wakes twice but with her teeth it's been more

tyler has always fed to sleep for every nap and every sleep, and he's almost 10 months but its worked so well for us, never had problems with naps or sleep as he transfers straight from boob to bed lol so we are continuing with that until he no longer wants it

I was feeding my son to sleep every sleep at 10 months. He was having 2 naps about 1-1.5 hours each from memory, and waking several times a night (but there were other issues that affected our night sleep).

If it works I say keep doing it, never caused us any problems and when he got a bit older he went to sleep by himself.

Had anything prior to this changed in her routine? Had she been sick and fed to sleep then? It could be that something, incl DC have caused her sleep associations to change
Jack was bf to sleep till I weaned off it at about 9-10mths. Ben bfs to sleep at his first nap as he is usually overtired after the kindy run. I actually quite enjoy it and it is such a good way to wind him (and me ) down

The only thing I can think of is that she got really upset when she'd pull herself up in her cot so I'd feed her to calm her down as well as DC.

But it's working so I'm not going to try and change it just yet!

Go with whatever works for both of you - they are constantly changing, so I just go with the flow.

I still BF DD to sleep for her day sleeps until she was about 11 months, she weaned herself off it. Feeding to sleep has never caused any problem for us. DD is a great sleeper, she has been sleeping through the night since she was 3-4 months old and if she does wake up she self settles. She is now 14 months and goes to bed fully awake for all her sleeps.
