weird, was just doing some googling about tips for travelling with a 3year old, as we are off to Europe next month. And I found all these references to car seats on planes??
Is this necessary/normal!?? -Anyone who has done much long haul flying??
TBH I have never noticed kids in carseats on planes,(But im not particulary observant) and surely they wouldnt do much good?? 
When we get there we intend to travel around by bus/train, so again hadnt even considered taking a car seat.
ANyone have any thoughts please??!! :)

Personally I would only bring it if you have a use for it at the other end.
We flew last year with 2.5yos and didn't use car seats. i've only used them when flying domestically with 2 x infants.
It's personal choice however, as my friend used car seats with her 3yo twins last year.
The advantage is that your kid is firmly strapped in and is sitting in a familar seat for a sleep.
The disadvantage is that you have something extra to lug around the airport when transitting.
If you do take them you'll have to contact the airline to make sure your seat passes the safety standards (which is should).

In USA it is quite common to have a carseat for your child as it just keeps them restrained in a seat during a long flight however it doesn't seem common over here.
I wouldn't bother with a three year old but it was excellent with a two year old.

I hadnt either but when the radian arrived it came with shoulder strap so you could wear it like a bag at the airport. God knows why you would its f'n heavy. I would if i were to be hiring a car at the other end otherwise just another big annoying thing to carry and expensive thing to replace if broken/stolen/lost.

It's certainly not compulsory or necessary but some people do do it. If you don't need one at the end then don't worry about taking one on the plane

something like this might be handy to pack in your bag for use on planes/trains/buses. I know my dad put one in his bus for dd and it made the lap belt much safer

We have done both...We had a long haul flight to the Uk and didn't use it - (mostly b'c my daughter then was under two and we didn't want to pay for an extra seat!). We were lucky that time and there was only one leg that we didn't get a bassinet seat on - and I wish we had had the carseat on that leg! We did take it more recently on a trip to Vietnam and it was a godsend. The carseat reclined back further than the airplane seat so My daughter could recline more. I think b'c it was also such a familiar feel she was more relaxed and her sleeping was excellent. I was also glad to have her so secure. We will definitely take the carseat on a gain on future flights.

I found this called trunki boostapak it is a booster seat that folds into a backpack and great for when you need it.

Slightly off topic, but we took DD to UK/Europe last year and I am now a HUGE advocate of those little animal backpacks with a tail/rein thing. It was AWESOME as we could keep her close by at all times but she just loved wearing her little backpack and it didn't look or feel like reins to her. I got our little kitten one off trademe for about $9, almost new.

We fetched a car seat on the plane when we emigrated out to NZ from the UK when DS1 was 2.5. We did it a) because we'd need it when we got here and b) we thought it was an easy way to restrain him if necessary and not have him climbing all over the place. It's not the 'norm' but we were worried about how well he would travel. He spent a reasonable amount of time in it, and when it was crowded and we couldn't stretch him across a couple of seats it meant we could all sleep or eat because it meant one of us wasn't having to hold him/be a pillow.
When we went back a few months ago we checked the car seat this time because we were going to need it at the other end. The reason we checked it this time instead of taking it on the plane was because it was a monster and by the time it was strapped into the seat and he was in it he would have been a bit squished, something we learned with DS1.....oooh and we had massively huge layovers in Singapore and didn't want to have to lug it around. LOL
