     Topic: Feta - if cooked?     Posted: 03 April 2011 at 7:26am |

So I know we're not supposed to have feta as it's a soft cheese, but what if it's cooked?
 Does that make it ok?

   From the NZFSA website:
"Generally should not be eaten uncooked while pregnant. However, OK to eat in small quantities if purchased in the manufacturer’s original packaging and eaten immediately after opening. Do not reseal to eat later, and do not eat if they have been repackaged in a deli or supermarket as they may have become contaminated"
Eta - Oh and I eat it cooked and hot (eg in Pizza or Lasagne) all the time but only if it has been freshly opened.

So in like a quiche or pizza etc?

Im not sure if its ok. I tend to avoid it. I would think probably not though.

Are you allowed Feta if its NZ made? is it just the overseas stuff that should be avoided

I eat it cold if freshly opened, cooked if not freshly opened :) I also make my own and eat it cold for the first couple of days (stored in brine) and in quiche etc after that.

Like mrs b's quote says, the food safety guidelines currently say it's ok :D they change their guidelines all the time though and everyone does different things so you just have to decide what you're comfortable with!

As long as it's still hot when you eat it, then yep, it's fine

I ate it cooked, but I also ate it cold from a freshly opened packet. My thinking was that it was good to go if it was fresh and made from pasteurised milk, so I'm sure it's A-ok if you cook it nice and hot.

Most fetas are pasteurised, so they should be fine to eat. Even when cold.

Personally I don't worry about the soft cheese prohibition. I have never had any kind of food poisoning in my life so I figure what are the chances of getting it now? I think listeria is killed by heat anyway.

Yea, all good cooked, as long as it's hot while you eat it. In NZ, it should be fine straight from the packet too, although for some reason I was always a bit cautious - overcautious, I think, but hey you do what you do to feel safe

I was pretty fussy with what I ate when pregnant but I ate Feta ALL the time. But like others have said, just made sure it was eaten straight after opening. Would only have camembert etc if heated tho.... not sure if there is a difference but for some reason I was always more worried about Camemberts/Bries than I was Feta

yup i've read that all/most soft cheeses in NZ are pasturised, so should be safe to eat if eaten straight away. I'm happy to eat camembert etc on top of a pizza, when it's piping hot, but otherwise won't eat it cold. If I don't need it, I'll avoid it.

Ive had a yummy feta salad during this pregnancy and I would eat it over and over and over again lol. I didnt get sick either.

This whole "dont eat this, dont eat that" thing is just common sense really. I mean, dont eat raw chicken (duh), dont eat cheese that is off (another duh)....some of the things I find on the list are soo extreme. I read an article in the paper a few weeks back that said that the food and health people have added MILK and APPLES to the list of things preggie women shouldnt eat/drink. I think thats so ridiculous.... which is why I have hardly followed the guidelines during this pregnancy.
