Topic: Our turn At the hospital last night Posted: 25 July 2007 at 9:36am |
I'm not happy!! Last night at 6-00 Micheal came in and said he was starting to get a headache, which he sometimes gets due to eyestrain. So I gave him panadol as usual and within minutes he was in his bed crying in a fetal position holding his head. He then said the room was swaying and he could see four of me. So I rang healthline told me to rush him straight to A&E as we were so close and they would ring ahead. We got there and they saw him straight away, his blood pressure was sky high, his pulse was racing and one of his pupils was dilated and not reacting to light. They tried to get him in the children's observation unit but they wouldn't take him so they put him in the adults observation ward. they warned me that they were very worried and wanted to watch him closely so they were going to admit him for the night. then he came back and said the children's ward was full so he was staying put and they would watch him for a while then send us home
Anyway to cut a long story short they gave him more panadol and some neurofen and then after a few hours he started to perk up. His stats went back down, most of his headache had gone however his vision was still blurry in one eye and the room was still swaying. SO we were allowed home at 11-00pm.
There diagnosis, severe migraine and possibly a virus!!! We were told to watch the blurred vision and vertigo and if he still had it in a few days go to the doctors. Or if he had another attack back to A&E. So no answers but lots of question. apparently it's very unusual for boys his age to have sudden onset migraines and the double vision is a concern.
My beef is if they weren't so full and they had been able to admit him like they wanted to we would have had some answers this morning!
Add to that me having a full on 60 minute panic attack while we were there and then several mini ones Argh. He is now home and still has blurred vision in one eye and the vertigo seems to come and go.
Sorry for the moan but I want answers!

Very scary! Do you have a good GP that will listen to you and do what needs to be done for it to be investigated further?

Yeah we do but she is away for the next three weeks and the other Doc we see is away for the next four. So we will keep a close eye on him and hopefully see her when she gets back, that is unless he gets worse.
They are both really good and like to have all the facts and answers as well so I have a lot of confidence in them, now it's just a waiting game. Hopefully it's just a freak one off thing and things will return to normal.

Big hugs Vick, that sounds really scary! I'm glad things settled down for Micheal and he is feeling better, but I feel your frustration with not getting any answers.
I have my fingers crossed that Micheal will stay well, and that your GP will be able to do a more thorough investigation and give you some answers when she gets back.

Oh boy that's really rough, I've had benign positional vertigo a couple of times - is that part of what he had? Anyway it's pretty horrible, I hope he feels better soon. Also hope you get a follow-up appointment sometime!

HOw scary! Make sure you push for answers. Not wanting to freak you out or anything but my ex boyfriend started getting really bad headaches when he was about 11yrs I think it was, happened a few times and thier doctor ordered a cat scan and turned out he had a tumor which they had to remove straight away. He used to go all dizzy and funny, couldnt walk straight etc... Of course this isnt common and really dont want to scare you but if it happens again make sure you get some answers especially when they say its uncommon for boys his age.

Funny you should say this, that was the first thing that ran through my head, simply because it was so sudden and fast. I'm really good at being a pain in the butt sort of person when it comes tho the kids so one way or another we will find out or at least rule out the problem.

not that i am a doctor or anything but given what you have described in your first post, i am quite suprised they didn't do a scan of his head, just to rule out any nasty's.
If you and michael still don't feel like things are right, get yourselves a referral and get a scan done to make sure.
oh you poor thing, you must have been beside yourself with worry!
