We went ot a "silver" party once. Ranged from people having some silver tinsel around their neck, to others wrapped in tinfoil and another guy had spraypainted his face silver!! It was fun

I threw a superhero party for DH's 30th. Lycra and shiney pants for miles!
We were quite nazi about it though and said on the invite that if you didn't come in costume then you wouldn't be allowed in. Sounds mean but it meant that everyone got into the spirit of things because they knew they weren't going to be the only doofus turning up in a costume.
We had a guy in a monkey suit, tank girl and heaps of x-men. Everyone had a blast because they were all their 'alter egos' for the night.
I reckon if you do dress up parties then it has to be all or nothing for it to work.
