Hi, I'm new to all this though I'm embarrassed to say I've been a lurker My cycles have been incredibly irregular for the last year, (its been a bit of a tearful day cos today is one year exactly since we began TTC with no success). Ive been on the depo inject for 6-7 years and the levlen pill for approx 2 years.... my last cycle was approx 70ish days before I got AF- approx every 3mths AF arrives...

Could this be the beginning of PCOS? Can it just start causing probs? or were the contraceptives possibly be masking the symptoms of it? Please help.. A year is a long time to wait....

TIA- Mindy

Hi Mindy,
Irregular cycles can be one of the symptoms of PCOS, but there can be other causes too.
If you have been trying for a year you should now go and talk to your GP about it so you can find out what's going on.
Good luck chicky

Hi Mindy, and welcome. I had no idea I had PCOS until a few months ago when we finally saw a specialist. I was the same as you thinking possibly my cycles were still trying to get back to normal after so much contraception (I was on the injection for about 8 years, then the pill before stopping everything). My cycles were 80+ days and I understand where you are coming from.
Go and see a doctor if you are worried. At least then your mind might be put at ease

I was the same. The contraceptive pill etc masks the symptoms of PCOS so often its not diagnosed until you start TTC. I would def recommend asking your GP for a referrel for a scan if you are not already under a fertility specialist - once you have a diagnosis it makes it easier to treat and know what you are dealing with.

I was off the pill for a year and had regular periods but was getting weird pains in my side my GP referred me for a scan and it was picked up. I was only ovulating every 2 months and wasn't TTC at the time but when me did it start it was nice to know what we were dealing with.

Good Luck

Thanks alot guys.. I have bee to the doctor x2 but kind of feel fobbed off .

The waiting list for a public u/s is 8months in palmy, i have been on the waiting list for 4months. I will def make an appt this week to see my G.P again and push harder to get up the queue a little, If that fails I guess I will have to go privately
funlvn, it makes me feel a lot better to know that our circumstances are so similar and you've got a lovely little baby on the way- Congrats!

Ok so I took your advice and saw a G.P today, not my regular one cos he was off sick. Anyway, I dicussed every thing with a female G.P and she agreed that a year is a long time tio be TTC sooo she has sent a referral to a fertility specialist (I have heard of this guy and he has a fantastic reputation),

It will take a few weeks to get in to see him. I can get an ultrasound there...

Consultation is $150 and U/S is another $50.... Ii feel so much better! thanks Funlvn and Peanut, your support and advice helped me make this step,

contraception masked my symptoms of PCOS aswell but i had been diagnosed with it whilst on the pill so knew in the back of my mind we would have trouble concieving when it came to it but we got there in the end and i'm sure you will too its just all the waiting and not knowing and your body not doing what it is suppose to that is frustrating and hard...... but i'm really glad you have got the ball rolling mindy good luck with your ultrasound and TTC chick fingers crossed you dont have to wait too much longer!

Well Done, Mindy! Its sometimes hard to question Dr's so was probably a bonus that you didn't get your regular Dr.

Good Luck and I have my fingers crossed for you! I had no probs conceiving the first time but the second time could be a different story

Hi guys, I'm pretty sure I've got PCOS but keep getting fobbed off by my GP. Went to a specialist and finally get to have a scan on Tues. My question is, if I do have it, how do they treat it?

I depends really. They dont treat the whole condition as such, they pick out the worst parts and go from there,.
For me the first step was Metformin, To treat my inulin resistance. They usually also try to get you to lose some weight if your over weight.
Then , Clomiphine or clomid to help bring on ov if your not already ovulating.
There are other medical steps ive heard of, maybe someone here can confirm: Ovarian drilling, lap?? Cant remember the others..

Hi Treen. Yup I had my u/s and I def have PCOS, Dr described my ovaries as swiss cheese which is apparently what it looks like on the u/s. I have finished my first cycle of clomid and am waiting for my day 21 blood test to see if I've ovulated. So fingers crossed! My test results show that I have good ovarian reserve and DH's "boys" are "normal". Just gotta wait and see really.

Are you waiting to see specialist or waiting for u/s? Or both? My G.P kept fobbing me off so I went in and asked assertively for a referral to a specialist and had to wait 6 weeks for appt but got my u/s on day of appt. Keep us posted. Good luck!

Hi MindyW, I've got the scan and I've done the blood tests so now I'm just waiting for my 2nd appt with the specialist. The whole process has been sooooo long. Good luck with you, too!

Fingers crossed this is our time.... kind of glad we dont have to do scan as was scared we wouldn't be allowed to try if too many follicles.
