What brand of apple do people use for stewing, crumbles and so on?

In Ireland you could buy a cooking apple brand that was very very tart.

I'm thinking Granny Smith but just wondering what others use.

You can sometimes buy bags of cooking apples & they are granny smiths.

I prefer Granny Smiths for cooking, but in all honestly, I'll use any that have begun to turn.

I actually just use any apples we have, with sugar and cinnamon it all comes out the same ..

That's true I guess.

I made the mistake of actually following the measurements in a recipe last weekend. My result was icky sticky super sweet.

I'll just have to do take 2 with more vague measurements I think

braeburns cook really well if you are after a sweeter apple than the trusty granny smiths. You won't have to add any sugar to a crumble if you use them either.

I use granny smiths for all baking... in the UK there is a way better selection of cooking apples :( Granny Smiths hold their shape well which is often useful!

I also eat granny smiths raw instead of other apples - can't stand sweet ones but this is probably cos I grew up eating the cooking apples off the tree in my Grandma's garden :)

I always wondered what apples were used in NZ for cooking, I always used the 'cooking apples' in Ireland so would have no clue! Thanks for this
