Topic: Good" suburbs in Dunners Posted: 24 January 2011 at 6:06pm |
Hi
I am orginally from Dunedin but haven't lived there for a while now. We are considering moving down there, depending on job availability for Hubby.
What are good suburbs down there now ?
TIA
ETA awful spelling

depends what price range your looking in and buying vs renting.
we're in andersons bay and its an awesome area, our culdesac is very child friendly.
tainui, st clair and st kilda are all nice.
maori hill, roslyn, bellknowles are quite expensive but nice.
kaikorai valley, brockville, glenross are cheaper.
north D, north east valley and central are not very desired family areas due to the students.
the one thing i would watch out for is if your up the hill how much does your car like the hill, some cars chew thru petrol getting up the hills...and if you dont drive whats the frequency of the busses like that gets as close to your area as possible.
(for me the bus is a 4min walk but only runs on a half hour service between 7am-6pm mon->fri. outside of them hours i have to walk 15min to a different bus stop)

I would say nice family areas are Andersons Bay, Waverley, Belleknowes, Maori Hill, Roslyn and parts of St Clair.
We're in Andy Bay and we're looking at moving in the next year or two. I'm looking here and Waverley.

All along the West Harbour area is great. We lived in Port Chalmers for 5 years (until 4 months ago) and loved it there, awesome community and good for kids.
Opoho is another nice child-friendly suburb, we went to the SPACE programme at their Playcentre, and apparently their primary school is very good.

ahaha i live in Corstorphine too. but 'up top'. huge view of the harbour - right by corstorphine house. our street is a cul-de-sac and very child friendly. our neighbours are all lovely and our next door neighbour brings us firewood most weeks lol.
NEV can get very cold. corstorphine up the top is great because you can get wonderful harbour views and we have full lounge room sun from sunrise to sunset.
brockville, some of south dunedin tend to be associated with the 'riff raff' - gang related etc. but there are nice places in every suburb.
if money is not a problem - maori hill and roslyn are great.
our house is 3 bdrm, HUGE open plan lounge room and kitchen, seperate toilet, interior laundry, bigish backyard, harbour views, driveway/parking for 5 cars, all day sun and without giving away the price - it was under 250K.
james - are you up top by kew/concord? im on Traquair st if you close by for a cuppa?

Mango, are you on the flat or up the hill?
out one window i see all thw way up to St Clair, and out the other way I see Bay cemetary, and if i go to the end of my street, thru the walk thru and keep walking and go across the golf course i can jump off a cliff and be in the sea
To be honest, most suburbs have desirable and not so desirable factors, it really comes down to the price range you've got and what localities you need, ie could walk to supermarket from home, could walk into CBD, good bus routes, good schools/day care etc

I live in Andy Bay (there seem to be a few of us here!) and we are looking at selling up soon but moving to a house in the same area coz it's great for kids. House prices are reasonable and the schools in the area are all good. Plus you're close to the beach and the peninsula and town is about 5-10 mins drive (depending on the time of day).
I would say avoid Caversham... I used to live and work there, and houses are dirt cheap, but there's usually a reason. But as people have said there are good and bad things about each suburb.
I actually think NEV isn't a bad area for families. Yeah, it's a student area, but if you go a little further down the valley, and make sure you buy/rent a house on the hill side, there are some lovely houses with big sections for not too much. Gardens/supermarket/town is close. Just check to see if the neighbours are student rentals or not.

We are living in Roslyn which is great (and our place is not expensive, quite the opposite... there are places out there).
