Topic: Gotta Love Hard Rubbish Collection!! Posted: 06 May 2007 at 5:54pm |
Every year we have the opportunity of putting out all our broken washing machines, dishwashers, fridges, chest of drawers etc for the council to collect.
And every year you get the "seagulls" squaking around each persons hard rubbish to see what they can recycle, sell or whatever.
Usually DH and I frown upon these "seagulls" rooting around in the trash....
But this year.... well I am a seagull!!!
Thus far from the lovely neighbour next door I have gotten 29 (yes 29) tuppaware containers (she said she was cleaning the pantry). We are keeping the really retro ones (you know the ones that I mean) and we are giving the others to DH's dad for his model train stuff.
We have also gotten a really neat dog kennel (dont have a dog but that is irrelevant) It's made of colour steel and is in excellent condition.... We do intend to get a dog, but when Ethan is older, perhaps once he is at school.
Missed out on one of those plastic playhut thingy's tho...... but bummed about that. Ethan would have loved it..
Anyhoo, time for me to eat my hat, and go trawling the neighbourhood for "stuff"!!!!!

I'm in West Auckland. I do feel a bit like trailer trash going thru people's rubbish. But hey, if it's free!!!! Great if you are on one income!
Plus, we have disposed of heaps of stuff this way in the past.
As they say, one person's trash is another person's treasure!
Its also a good opportunity for the council to "recycle" as much of the goods as they can.. I know that they sell off most of the metals like copper wires etc which in turn reduces my rates!

I studied in Auckland and many a student flat was furnished with other people's 'trash'!
Those collections are awesome. We always had fun just spotting what people had thrown out when driving through suburbs who were having thiers.

We used to live in Parnell, and got heaps of people scouring our rubbish when it was inorganic collection time, as Parnell rubbish was usually quite swish! If you can find out when each community's inorganic collection is, you can plan to go to the flash neighbourhoods and get the stuff that the rich people biff because it's sooooo last season. (My in-laws live in St Heliers, so I know what I'm talking about!) In Auckland, try Grey Lynn, Mission Bay, St Heliers, Ponsonby, Parnell, Remuera... there are some fabulous finds out there!!!
