Topic: Gripe Water? Infacol? Posted: 29 February 2008 at 7:14am |
As of last Thursday Hannah's been really windy. So much so that she's really unsettles at night and it takes us a good 3 hours to get her down after feeding. She's not as bad during the day time feeds, but she's definitely unsettled.
We'd been giving her gripe water for about a week before then, but decided that it wasn't helping.
My MW suggested Infacol. We started giving her that on Tuesday evening but on Weds and Thursday nights she's been screaming for about an hour after feeding and not bringing up a huge amount of wind.
We'd get her down after a further hour or two (!!!), but only after putting her into her basinette and getting her up again because the wind keeps coming up and waking her again. (same goes for the 3am feed - I've been up since then trying to settle her)
Anyway. Long story short.
Has anyone else found either of these products to be more of a hinderance than a help? Any tips?
And other products? My mw mentioned some homeopathic remedies and to talk to a health store...

We only used gripe water a couple of times and I was never entirely convinced that it did anything.
What positions are you trying to get the wind out? I found with Spencer it was good to lay him face down across my knees and rub his back rather than have him upright or on a shoulder. The laying across like that stopped him crying and I think him calming down a bit helped it come up.
Hope you find something that helps soon cos that sounds awful

I've got some Infacol here that you can have. Only used it a couple of times for Cooper. The times that we did use it was great.

We only found gripe water good for hiccups otherwise Miss M was more likely to spill. Infacol worked much better for us and always seemed to help wind her properly.

We used heaps of infacol with Miss C's colic and I think it was the only thing that helped her.
Her colic didn't go away until she was able to sit unaided

Infacol sometimes worked for us. Colimed by naturopharm is quite good at helping to settle.
But we find whenever Daniel has wind, popping him on his tummy helps him burp more and if its wind at the other end then doing bicycle movements helps him settle.

Gripe water seemed to make Thomas vomit, I found Infacol brilliant but I did have to use it before every feed for a few days before it really helped. I also had to avoid all foods that would possibly be windy foods for 2 months or so then it all came right, I have heard that the weleda colic powder works well too

the thing we had the most success with was a teaspoon of cooled boiled water. gripe water just never did a thing for gabriel. but guaranteed he would burp after the water...

gripe water or infacol did nothing for us either. I found feeding Tom in a slightly upright position helped and stopping often for burps....he suddenly grew out of it all so fingers crossed so will she.

i had to do that with charli quite alot too.....it helped calm her down and more often than not, she'd drift off to sleep on my lap and then i'd transfer her into her bed....are you sleeping hannah on her side? my m/w also suggested that for charli as she would never settle on her back. we rolled up handtowels and had one behind and infront of her.
i hope you find a solution soon

weirdly for me the best wind position is over my shoulder..for Dh it's rubbing his tummy then holding him upright...bizarre its different for both of us:)! 3 days ago he suddenly started bringing up wind better and now doesnt take as long..before it could take a long time..he still has unsettled periods but not from wind as much anymore.. (though sometimes he will lay down then sit up and bring out wind)

I'm a bit like you kawww. I found over the shoulder I could get my shoulder just under his ribs which helps. Tom hated being on his tummy across my knees even though he loved tummy time. and I couldnt master sitting him up to burp him. But now I sit him up for burps all the time as he more often power chucks than burps and its easier to catch if he is sitting up than have it all through my hair
sometimes laying them flat then sitting them upright can get the wind up too...bit like those teddies that you tip up to get them to growl

I found the colimed naturopathic spray by naturopham (sp?) good for burbs, and gripe water better if it was more farts/sore tum (while pushing his legs up into his chest). Sitting him up straight was the best burping position for us. If I couldn't get a burp and knew he had wind, I'd lay him down for a few seconds then pick him back up and that usually got it.
Hopefully it gets better for you soon. Maybe try to avoid chocolate, tea/coffee/cola and citrus fruits in the mean time (if you're bfing that is). Its been so long since I had to burp Jake now - I think he burped himself by about 3 months.

Neither gripe water or infacol really worked with Jack. We only got this every now and then but it would last for at least a couple of hours and mainly at night.
If you can before the screaming starts you could try lying her on her back and moving her legs in a peddling motion, this can help get the wind up.
For us, I think that it is actually related to what I was eating. Have steered clear of anything resembling curry, butter chicken, tandoori etc and the wind has stopped. Am too scared to try eating it again to see if that is the answer or coincedence. Will have to wait till I stop bf
