Topic: Grrr! Complaints from nana neighbours... Posted: 07 December 2006 at 12:40pm |
This is also totally OT, but DH isn't home so I needed a small rant! We are in a rental in a nice suburb and all of our neighbours are the, ahem, grandparently type. This morning our property manager came to do an inspection and said that while the house is fine, and the neighbours think that we are very quiet, she has had a few phone calls complaining about the state of our garden.
Now, if it was a jungle, with weeds everywhere and grass up to my knees, I would be able to understand it. But no. They are grumpy because the lawn -- which is fully fenced and you can't see AT ALL unless you're standing on a ladder looking down into it -- has some tall grass near the fence, where the mower doesn't reach. Our weed-whacker-thingie is broken so we are waiting to get it fixed, hence the tall grass. And by "tall", I am talking about 6 inches. And it's only by the fence. INSIDE the fence, not outside where they can see it. The lawn is mowed regularly.
They are also grumpy because there is a patch of dirt next to our front porch, which was there when we moved in -- there is one struggling plant in the middle of it, but it's basically a square metre of dirt that hasn't been properly "gardened". The oldies want some flowers. They want some plants. They want our property to look like theirs. Our property is very tidy, weeded, and mowed, but it's not House & Garden out there.
What HACKS ME OFF is that the house can't even be SEEN by any of the neighbours unless they are actually in our driveway snooping around, or standing on a ladder looking over the fence. It's at the end of a long driveway and is almost entirely hidden from the road and from the other houses by our fence and by the garage of the house in front of us. So what were they doing, wandering around peeping over our fence and looking at our dirt patch at the front door?
Now, I see these grandparently neighbours out in their gardens ALL THE TIME, weeding and planting and grooming with nail scissors. Sorry, I ain't doing that. I have a baby, and a part-time job, and DH has a full-time job. I don't have hours and hours to be out gardening in my little sunhat and flowered gloves. Unless you are going to offer to watch my child while I garden, Nana, or bring your little spade over and get stuck in yourself, BUTT OUT!
Thanks, I needed that.

How annoying and how rude!
If you are maintaining the property to the standard it was in when you arrived then the property manager has no right to even be mentioning the phone calls to you, she should be telling the owner of the property about them not you.
Stupid neighbours!

that's pretty petty, gosh, they should see our lawn, then they'd have something to complain about!

Yea I heartily agree. Gardening is hard work with littlies but seems to be a hobby for the oldies. What is the landlord's view? Does he think you should be more compliant?

It's one of those neighbourhoods where everyone knows everyone else, and apparently when the owner of the house decided to rent it out, he gave the rental agent's details to all the neighbours to help the agent keep tabs on the house. I don't mind that they know who the agent is, and I don't even really care about them spying on us and reporting on us to her -- that seems to be just the kind of people they are (nosy, nosy, nosy). But you would think they would thank their lucky stars that we are quiet and keep to ourselves and don't throw wild parties or have empty beer cans littering our driveway. Our baby sleeps through the night, and our dog doesn't bark, so they have nothing to complain about. But no, they have to find SOMETHING to pick on, I guess. Sigh.
DH says not to worry about it, so I'll try not to... Except for later today when I have to trek to our letterbox and pass three of the old bats on the way, all of them gardening like mad! LOL

Wow, thanks for the sympathy -- I was SURE there would be a nana in here to tell me off about how I should be more house-proud and find the time to keep up appearances. LOL
Well, the rental agent said, "You know all of the neighbours are grandmas, and their gardens are immaculate, so please try to keep your garden in line with theirs." AS IF! It wasn't "in line with theirs" when we moved in, and I'm sure as heck not spending money and time to tszuj it up just because the retired neighbours don't think it's posh enough.
What next? Will they complain when I answer the door in my pyjamas, or go to get the mail in baby-food-stained trackies and unwashed hair? Sheesh... Actually, I think I might be compelled to do things to provoke the oldies now. Suggestions? (I am SO mean!!!)

OOOOOH it gets better!
Just had a call from the rental agent -- "I forgot to mention that the neighbours would prefer if you kept your recycling bin out of sight instead of on the porch, and if you could please collect it from the kerb soon after the recycling truck comes by."
Now this is getting ridiculous! The recycling bin is on the porch because it's the easiest place for me to biff empty baby food jars into it. And the recycling truck comes on a Monday morning, after DH has gone to work and when I'm usually working too. I'm not sitting waiting for them to come so I can run out and grab the bin from the kerb! Give me a break, people!

OMG, I would be inclined to ask for all this in writing then take it to the tennancy tribunal. Im sure they would have something to say about it. Surely they cant legally ask you to do these things?? And i would think the owner would be grateful that they have tennants that arnt trashing their house and are keeping the grounds reasonable.
FARK putting up with that.

I too would be asking for it in writing and then taking it further. They should come and look at my front garden its a mess as we are working on the bedroom in front of it. The path is a mess of rocks and paint flecks and all sorts. What would they say about the recycling bin if you were away from your home all day??

LOL just popped out to go to the store and saw one of the oldies out in her front garden doing something to her climbing roses. She gave me the NASTIEST look as I hooned down the driveway! Probably snooped around my garden while we were out!
I just looked in our lease and all it says is, "Tenants shall keep the premises clean and tidy and free from rubbish, bottles, cigarette butts and like matters. Lawns are to be mowed fortnightly, gardens kept tidy and hedges cut." Well, that's pretty standard. The rental agent didn't DEMAND that we keep the recycling bin in the garage, so I'm not going to even deal with that -- it stays where it is on the porch where I can reach it easily. As for collecting it from the kerb, they can also forget it -- I will do that when I am good and ready. The other houses on the street frontage don't collect theirs the moment the truck leaves, so why should I? It's just this little six-house enclave of oldies who seem to want things a certain way...
I think we'll just make sure to weed the garden and mow it when we're supposed to, and that's it. I ain't planting flowers or spending hours on my knees in the dirt. If they get snippy again, I'll break out the tenancy agreement and show them what it says! HOW RUDE!
And WHY could they not come and mention it to us, instead of going behind our backs to the rental agent? That is also rude. It would have been so much better if they came to my door and talked to me about it, rather than complaining about something they don't even have a right to complain about.
Sigh...

That is pathetic, especially telling you where on your property you should keep your recycling bin!!! Is there something anal about their property you can complain to them about? Maybe a branch overhanging or a few leaves dropping on your side of the fence lol

Ummm ... ok, so the oldies are annoying, but personally I'd be MORE peeved at the rental agent! They should be letting the oldies know that it's none of their business and that they are to stop ringing her with their everyday complaints.
Actually I'm realllllly peeved for you!! Grrrrrrrr
But seriously - next time she calls you, tell her to tell them that you are keeping to your tenancy agreement and they can't do anything about it.

I'd be really annoyed too, and would probably do something stupid like go door to door with the baby in tow, and either tell them to their faces to keep their noses out of where they aren't wanted !

It sounds like there is a body corporate involvement somewhere here - is that the case? If so there may be other rules you arent aware of...check with the agent...and if not then tell agent to get back to the nosy grans and tell them to butt out!
We own rentals and tell you the gardens are to be maintained but we do not expect = and wouldnt like it if tenants planted the gardens out themselves!
We let thru an agent for one and she is a middle person but nothing like what you are having to deal with...
tell agent to let the nanas know that if they want to bring the bin in for you you would be grate ful esp with a baby and all!!!

Haha omg.. this is a classic! Seriously though, if someone said that to me, I'd do everything I could to go against what they asked me to.. Not only would I leave the recycling bin out for longer, I would put rubbish in it that wasn't recyclable, so that it could lie on the street for a while too
Our landlord doesn't come around much, only if we ask him to come for a problem we need fixing.
