I think that I might have this after looking up my symptoms on google. (i know I know google is not my friend).
Anyway just wondering if anyone else has had this whilst pregnant, was everything ok? I am paranoid at the best of times and having a yucky disease does not help.
I have a dr appointment this afternoon to find out properly what it is that I have.

Hiya,

Both me and Rach (mum2emj) had hand foot & mouth while pregnant this year, we both got it off our daughters and were both worried about it. Check out the May mums to be thread...I'll come back with some quotes for you from what we were told by out doctors/midwives. Short story - it's fine, it's not something that will pass through the placenta to the baby (Parvo is the one you have to worry about) and sure enough, both our May babies turned up fine (if a little late ). I had ulcers in my mouth for a couple of months afterwards, it took ages to clear up. The only way it could affect baby is if you still have the blisters when you give birth.
We were both googlers too, it's definitely NOT your friend!

Thank you. I don't have anything in my mouth yet but first symptom was a sore throat and a random unexplained fever on Monday. I've had sore finger tips and soles of feet for few days and then this morning noticed a rash on my fingers which was when I started googling.

Strange thing is I can find no sign of a symptom on Spencer but he's coming to the doc with me so will get the doc to check him out as well. He hasn't had a fever or anything but he has been mega grumpy but I put it down to a tooth that is coming through.

We were at a birthday party on Saturday though and I spent a lot of time holding one of the other babies whilst her mum popped out so is possible I got it from her.

I had a trawl through the Due in May thread and found these:

This from Rach:
back from doc- i was right, she does have hand foot and mouth, very midly and he doc was suprised that i noticed and came up with the diagnosis myself.
he also said that unless i was less than 13 weeks pregnant me and baby should be fine ahhh... sigh of relief... i think! lol i think i will worry about it anyway until i know bubs is all good when its born.

This from me:
We definitely have hand foot and mouth here, took DD to the doctor this morning and got it confirmed. I had my midwife appointment as well, so checked with both her and the doctor and they both said it wasn't a problem during this stage of pregnancy, except if I/we contract the virus and have symptoms at the time of birth or close to the birth - I think because the baby has a high chance of contracting it then. Midwife rang the virologist at medlab to confirm this and I heard the same thing from a paediatrician (sorry -spelling) friend of mine. So hopefully we'll be ok.

Good luck at the doctor's!

I have never heard of this before....

What are the symptoms of this, can some one tell me? DD is sick at the mo with fever and caugh, when I took her to doc he said just a flue....But I am stunned that there is such a thing as HF&M Disease.

From what i have read (i had never heard of it either) it starts with a fever, sore throat and headache and then a few days after that a rash of blisters appears on the finger tips and/or soles of feet and then also mouth ulcers.
It seems as though adults don't normally get it as you normally have anti bodies from being exposed as a child. Its a mild disease and all you need to do to treat it is tend to the fever and keep up fluids. It is however contagious for quite some time.

I never had the fever or the sore throat, so you don't have to have all the symptoms. It wasn't all that mild for DD - she couldn't eat most things for a couple of days because of the blisters in her mouth and was not a happy camper for about a week.
It's funny that they say it's rare for adults to contract HF&M because both DH and I had it, Rach had it and I've heard of many other parents who have caught it from their kids.

Just got back from the docs and I do have hand foot and mouth, but it looks like Spencer doesn't. Although doc said sometimes it can be so mild that you don't get any symptoms.
As I am borderline 1st trimester he is going to check with obstetrics to see if there is anything they want me to do/not do etc but he said that as there is no treatment they probably won't be able to tell me anything else.
My fingers and my feet are really sore, I hope this doesn't last very long.

Gp phoned earlier this evening, they want me to have blood tests to confirm that it is HF&M and then if it is I will have to go and see the obs and most likely have another scan to see if it has affected baby. So close to not being in the 1st trimester as well although hopefully that will be on my side. They have said there is nothing they or I can do it is just a matter of crossing fingers that everything is ok.
