Brief history... Had some spotting about 3 weeks ago so had some bloods done, HCG levels came back at 5800 (at approx 7 weeks) then 48hrs later at 5600. So went for a scan and found out pregnancy had stopped growing at 5wks 4days (we found this out 2 weeks ago today) The next day I started bleeding (tomorrow it will be 2 weeks). I had more bloods done a couple of days after the scan and levels had risen to 6000, and then again 4 days ago and they've only dropped to 5000. Does anyone know what it means for them to still be so high? My doctor had said she expected them to be in the hundreds and then nothing else would need to be done because my body's obviously doing what it needs to. But I'm concerned that because of the levels I will need to go in for a D&C or something. This is my first miscarriage so I'm really unsure of what happens. And how long is it 'normal' to bleed for?

Also, when is it safe to start trying again? I've heard so much conflicting advice... that it's important to let your body have a normal period in between getting pregnant again / that if you start trying straight away the chance of becoming pregnant is higher because of the hormones in your body etc... It's so confusing!

I had to have blood tests for about two weeks after my miscarriage - my levels weren't doing "as expected" but in the end they dropped back. I had been in hospital with an infection and on an oxytocin drip to encourage "contractions" and get rid of the remaining material before that and it still took quite a while for them to come down.

In terms of trying again, we were told there was no set timeframe but the docs suggested waiting for at least a normal cycle before trying again. We lost our baby in April and haven't had any luck yet. I don't think there's any reason not to try straight away, doctors just suggest to give yourself some time to cope with everything.

Best of luck. Miscarriages are so unfair.

Hi Rosee

Really sorry to hear you are going through this. Sorry I can't help with the HCG levels. Everyone is different so its hard to say what is "normal" but when I m/c naturally it started slowly then got heavy then finished off like a normal period and in total took about two weeks until it had stopped completely. I decided on a D&C for my last m/c and I was lucky I seemed to get back to normal quickly and didn't have much bleeding afterwards at all.

It is confusing working out when to start trying again as there is a lot of conflicting info out there. My Dr's advice was to start trying when it felt right for us emotionally rather than physically.

I hope that things get back to normal for you soon.

Sorry to hear your sad news RoSee, as far as Im aware your HCG levels can take 4-6 weeks to return to pre-preg level, (you will not get a normal period until they have done so)-correct me if Im wrong ladies!

Re trying again we have always been told same as Orca, whenever you are ready, but wait @ least 1 period.
Hugs through this difficult time & good luck when you are ready to try again xx

Not sure about the levels sorry, as both my MC were natural and didn't have much monitoring after the events.

We were also told to wait 1-2 periods before trying again.

Sorry to hear you are going through this to you
