    Posted: 23 November 2008 at 10:03pm
I've got a really nasty split in one of my nipples that just won't heal. I've had it swabbed and there's no bacteria growing, and I've been using Pimafucort which has cleared up the redness and Purelan but nothing seems to heal the split itself. It's been there more than 2 weeks and it's bloody sore. I've seen a lactation consultant and lil miss is latching perfectly so it's not her. I wonder if the reason it won't heal is coz every time she feeds the nipple is drawn out which opens up the split again as it's right on the join, but short of not feeding her I don't know how to get around that?

Any suggestions on how to nix it?

ouchy ouchy!!  Can you leave BM around the split and let your boob dry....not always the most flattering look but hey....

otherwise, what happens to it if you express?  Could you do that from that side and feed her only on the other for a while?

Ouch!!! I'm always harping on about this but I can highly recommend Hypercal lotion. You dilute it with water and daub it on a couple of times a day for up to a week. It's a weleda product. Abit costly, but you can use it for all sorts of things.

ouchies Emma!

Gosh i dont really know...when i had a split nipple in my first week of breastfeeding i just put breastmilk on it and tried to get my boob in the air(a bit hard when its the middle of winter lol).
My midwife told me that the sun is the ebst thing for healing, so maybe put some BM on it and get ya boob out in the sunshine!

I used breastmilk and some gladwrap when my nipples were getting destroyed from expressing when in hospital.

I know this is the complete opposite to the 'fresh air' but it worked wonders for me.

Ohhh ouchies!!!

I can sympathize, but I can't offer any suggestions on how to fix the problem as I had a Bleb (nipple blister) for AGES and it wouldn't heal because like yours...it kept opening I used HEAPS of Purelan but I also leaked profusely so needed breast shields and they would get stuck between feeds and rip off the top layer Even had my Midwife, a Lactation Consultant and my GP stumped for ideas

One day, it just disappeared... then a week later I gave up breast feeding for personal reasons

Good luck though, let us know how you get on

Thanks for the ideas It's pretty much always covered in breastmilk coz I leak so much, but I'm trying the fresh air thing out tonight. I usually have to wear a bra and breastpads 24-7 to catch the leakage but tonight I decided sheets be damned, I'll sleep braless and let them get some air. Failing that I might try the glad wrap idea.

The Hypercal sounds interesting too Kabe, I the Weleda stuff. What else do you use it for?

It's hard to deal with them when you can't go without a bra/shields for too long eh? I leaked like a fricken faucet (even the midwives at the hospital joked i should start my own breast milk bank LOL) so I couldn't even sleep bra less (sometimes i still can't and it's been 6 months )

Good to know about the Hypercal.. next time I'll definitely give that a go before anything else

Good luck Emma

I had a cracked nipple with both of mine and both times it took ages to heal because the babies suction opens it up at every feed. Fresh air is the only thing that helped it heal.

If you don't want to wear a bra and nursing pad to bed but don't want leaks then sleep in a polyprop top. The leaks are absorbed and you don't feel wet because the polypropylene is designed to pull the moisture away and keep you warm even though its wet.

Maya, hypercal is a great healer, so can be used on cuts & grazes. I also used it down below after the birth and it worked a treat! Lotion is better than the cream.

Yes yes yes I had this with Kryssi. The split was on the side where her tongue was so the wound reopened every time she fed. I had to feed lying down for that side for 5 days or so, to let it heal.

Hmmm, I have a polyprop top. Good idea! I woke up in a puddle this morning. Didn't help that lil miss slept thru for the first night in ages, I was soaked!

Will look for some Hypercal tomorrow. I'm guessing I'd find it at a pharmacy or health store?
