Topic: Hemmrhiods or Anal Fissure - help! Posted: 31 January 2012 at 2:51pm |
I gave birth to my son 10 weeks ago and pretty much ever since then I have had problems going number twos, I thought I had hemmrhiods.. at first it was very painful and bled. The midwife prescibed me ultraproct ointment and suppositories and they helped for a little while but came back pretty quick after they ran out, she prescibed me another dose and the same thing happened they came back, it's not as bad as it first was but still ver painful to go to the toilet My midwife finished with me and I just kept using the cream but about 2 months later it was still really sore when I went to the toilet..so I went to the doc a few weeks ago and he said there was no obvious piles there?? Then he put his finger up my bum and said it could be a small hemmrhoid ( it doesn't feel small!!) or he said it could be a fissure or tear. He prescribed me rectogesic and it was $50 which i can't afford but thought I would try anything to get rid of the pain!! the ointment makes me dizzy and gives me headaches which are some of the side affects, so hard to take care of a baby when you are feeling this way! Anyway..has anyone had the problem of hemmrhiods or anal fissures that just won't go away? And how did you get rid of them?

Never thought I would be talking about this online But remember looking this up when I first got pregnant and realised I had a fissure, not piles, bleeding got scary once! So just changed my diet to include kiwifruit everyday. Surprised no-one has mentioned or suggested this. Also any roughage you can get in your day and if you are into it, prune juice (I happen to like it) and others swear by Kiwicrush. And also water, drink as much as you can til it is easier to go and this gives everything a chance to heal, then cut back to maybe just water and the fruit (2 a day) GL

Thanks Millemama! I'm starting to think it's a fissure now and not rhoids as the doc couldn't see any when he did am examination.. I am already making sure I have 2 kiwifruit a day and it does make everything a bit softer lol! i have got prune juice in the fridge I should really start drinking it I don't mind it either! I find if I get enough roughage it starts feeling better but if I don't it just gets mega sore again..i also prob don't drink as much water as I should so will get onto that, thanks

Firstly, I really feel for you!!! You should be able to spend this time enjoying your new bub rather than being in pain.
I developed a nasty fissure after the birth of my son. It took 9 months to heal and has flared up since when my diet has got a bit slack. I would be in tears when I needed to go to the toilet. I tried lots of things. The main thing is to keep things as 'soft'as poss so that the fissure (which is pretty much a cut) is able to heal with out being split open. Like millemama said - lots of water, lots of fibre.
The thing that I really think healed it in the end was a product called nulax. It's a natural fruit paste that comes in a green box. I think I used it everyday for a few months (I'm not really sure if you are supposed to use it for that long though....) it kept things soft and the fissure was able to begin to heal.
If you are in pain (It hurt me to walk or sit) I would suggest soaking in a hot salted bath (I used a big bucket thing - soooo not attractive!) wipe with baby wipes, DO NOT strain whatever you do, rocking from side to side on the toilet as you go helps, and if it really hurts to go number 2's lubricate with vasaline before you need to.
I know it's all a bit TMI but really hope some of this helps! Managing the pain took over my life for months and it really got me down. I'm now a week over due with baby number two and sooooo scared I'm going to get another fissure. I have prunes packed in my hospital bag!
All the best!

Thanks melopop!! It really is a horrible thing, the things we do to get our bubs huh? I will try all of those things thanks, I really hope I don't have this for another 7 months! It doesn't sound as bad as yours but still pretty painful and i dread going to the toilet, I have even taken a nerofen in the morning so that maybe it wouldn't hurt so bad! Will get the nulax and see if that helps, thanks so much! Best of luck for the arrival of your new little one, fingers crossed this doesnt happen to you again!

Melopop, I had 2 bottles of prune juice, prob first thing I packed ready for the hospital, lol, they def did the trick! Although found it a little hard on your teeth due to the sugar content so remember to brush (so hard to achieve at night with new born)
Guest - I'm not very good with water either, but I buy Soda water and seem to drink more of it at night, fill up the glass a couple of times thru night.
The things we put up with for our littlies GL

Okay, not sure I actually want to share but I was given great advice by my doctor and it worked. And I feel for you so I will share!
Basically, I was following the fruit = soft guidelines but now and then the fissure would start off again. The doctor said that actually you need a harder stool when using the cream, as the idea is it needs to heal at its widest. This advice worked.
And I'm feeling queasy, so stopping there.
Good luck

Oh ok :-/ Thanks Kate! It's still pretty sore though...what cream did you use? The cream I use makes me dizzy and gives me headaches so I can't drive when I use it which it kind of impossible when I need to go out!

Can't remember, but I don't think it had that sort of side effects. It was just a steroid. Maybe ask your pharmacist?

It says on the box that you may get dizziness, headaches etc so it's normal :( I can't use it if I am going to drive somewhere as it will be dangerous! So I'm just putting it on at night before I go to bed and it's not really doing anything

Oh feeling for you I had fissures as well after DD - was on and off for 9 months as well and I used to always eats kiwkicrush but still then it kept coming back - in the end I used that retrogeaic ($50) stuff as well and that is what cleared it up for good - it took about 2 weeks so might pay to preserve with it - Ultrproct was useless!

Didn't read everyone's replies so sorry if repeating!
Nu lax (natural fruit laxative) worked wonders for me. It says not to use while breast feeding but that's just due to possible dehydration so keep fluids up! Use for a lot longer than you think you need to as takes a LONG time for the cut to knit back together. I used it for about 5 to 6 months from memory and then slowly weaned off.
Can buy from any pharmacy.
Good luck! They suck big time!!!

I feel your pain! I had fissures (after both children) and they took ages to heal. They got better at times, then worse again, finally about 10 months to heal completely.
Advice above all good, keep stools loose with water, bran, fruit, kiwicrush, prunes/juice etc. Whatever works for you.

I find this interesting as after the birth of my DS I ended up with either haemorrhoids or a fissure not sure as I have not had it checked, I know I should :S. So if its a fissure its not visible like a haemorrhoid would be, its more of a cut?

I just had this problem and still do if I dont take a softener.
I do a few things, I try to drink at least two pump bottles of water a day and eat lots of veggies and fruit.
I take a stool softener called Laxol to help it along too.
It got to the point where I couldnt pass poop so I had to then get an enema from the pharmacy called Microlax which has been AMAZING.
I've been using Sudocream on my fissures because the zinc helps with the cut healing and also having sitz baths (sitting in warm water up to your hips) it stimulates blood flow to the area to help with healing and provides instant relief after it feels like you're pooping razorblades!
