Topic: Hemp inserts (again)     Posted: 26 July 2008 at 12:48pm |

So I bought some hemp inserts on TM, washed them 8 times like it said before I used them but Jack still leaked (only slightly) overnight. The booster didn't hold much (not even close to what his BG microfibre insert holds).

Should I keep washing them to fluff them up more? Sorry if this is a really dumb question, but I'm having a really dumb moment

How many layers are the inserts?

With hemp and bamboo you can get different weights which dictates how much they absorb. That person may have used a light weight hemp which may by why they aren't absorbing much.

When you washed them did you do a hot wash or cold wash? Hot washes are the best for getting their absorbency up to 100%

Apparently drying them in the dryer can help too (not that much help to people like me who doesn't have one).

I used Nix-Kidz hemp flats to boost Leo's night nappy when he was younger. They were 2-layers of hemp fleece which I trifolded for 6 layers, then added a Foxybot hemp/mf insert on top (always need mf on top to catch fast-flow wee). I washed them in warm water (tumble-drying in between) 6 times before using them and had no problems. I don't usually dry nappies in the dryer but I was just desperate to use the flats so did it all in one day

These are nix-kidz ones, I think maybe 4 layers? They're tapered not flats though. I'll wash them again in hot a few times and dry in the dryer. Ta ladies!

Are you using them with microfibre inserts on top? If you're just using the hemp alone then the wee might be rolling off before it has time to absorb (hemp is slow absorbing). If you put a mf insert on top then it will absorb the wee and let is slowly soak into the hemp. If you don't want to buy mf inserts you can go to Mitre 10 Mega and buy a bulk pack of mf cleaning cloths - they're really cheap and folded up they make a great booster!

Emz, I don't know if you got the same as me but I got some of them from nix-kidz and they're slightly contoured but mine are only 2 layers of hemp fleece. I find they're good for adding a bit more absorbency but they definitely need to be doubled or tripled up if you want them to last for ages. Overnight I'd probably even go with 4 or 5 if they're the same as what I have.

I have a hemp trifold from snazzipants and that is 9 layers when folded and that only just gets Livvy through the night when I use it with a BG microfibre insert and usually another doubler.

How many of them are you using? and is it during the day or night?

This is for night, I have a BG microfibre over top and this 4 layered one. I think it will be fine once it absorbs more, Jack doesn't pee as heavily as Livvy obviously cos he used to last in a BG insert and 2 doublers (newborn insert). I think it should be fine once I've washed them more.

If you're using it overnight you might need 2 hemp inserts, if you're still getting leaks.
