Hi mummies,

Would you hire baby items to help you trial before buying such as books, dvds, bottles, swaddles etc?

Would you be happy to have it posted to you, and then post them back by a set date?

I wouldn't see why not....I find the toy library a fabulous place

Bottles yes, not so sure on the nipples, especially for a little bub.

To be honest prob not - maybe for big items, but not for little things. I think that when you have a new baby its hard enough to get through normal day to day life without having to worry about posting stuff back to someone at a certain time / within a timeframe.

But maybe thats just me - as I am quite unorganised!!

Probably only things like slings and backpacks as they are quite expensive if the baby doesn't like them. We use the library and only buy DVD's for children if we've already seen them and liked them.

I think it would be a risky business as not all products will be returned & not all products will be sent to honest people.

As for sending stuff back I would want a post free bag supplied or a courier sent by you to pick the items up...you could put the cost in the hiring.

If I was to hire items I would go to a baby place that does this as I would want to see the condition of it first & also get the help needed like a demo etc.

Also low cost stuff are not really worth a person to hire cause if you do buy a say a DVD for $17-40 & have to pay $5-8? to hire what is the point?

If I was going to do something like this I would have options to buy & sell new stuff, so an online shop & hire to buy.

I don't know if you would really make much money.

I think it really depends on the quality and the cost - most things I've found are cheap enough to buy without the need for hire.
I am hiring a nappy kit but that's more to try the different ones before buying a larger stash.

Books and DVDs I get from the library is for and they are free.

Thanks for all the replies. What if they were items that are not so easy to get hold of, or have large wait lists at the libraries and would be cheaper to hire for pick ups and slightly more for posting to and from. Postage would come with everything to just take it to the post office, after taping the box and no further action needed. The postage would be in a recyclable box too.

I guess most items I will end up using I am going by recommendations and suggestions from other mothers, whether it be from the OB ladies or other mother's groups as personal experience seems to be the best recommendation.

I guess its depends on what type of things you are planning to hire etc.
As there are toy and book libraries that already operate effectively.

The plus side would be for rural families that don't have access to these facilities or who can't get to town.

i would probably only consider it for expensive items. then in saying that... whats the guarentee that they are in perfect condition (for safety reasons)...?

I think it would work for things like exersaucers and jolly jumpers that you aren't sure if your child will like before you buy

The other thing to consider is Trademe as you can pick up baby stuff at really good prices.

Personally no i wouldn't. If you shop around you can pick up everything at sale price saving yourself some money. And then if something doesn't work its easy enough to flog it off on trademe. I don't really see the benefit in hiring.

Some good points noted.

Some children are fussy and there are some items that you just do not want to send a large sum on only to find they do not work for the given child. Also some mums have told me that their older children like one thing then consecutive children will not accept the same item.
So this way you can try, and then purchase the preferred item, sending back the hired items and getting the new one posted to you. No more throwing money down the drain and sometimes the items are so hard to find on Trademe and when it is a word of mouth item it may no longer be in stock, or only available online stores etc.

Any other thoughts appreciated.
