Kobe has decided he wants to pee like Max (our dog) on the grass. While i dont agree with him going outside to go to the toilet when we have a perfectly good toilet in the house, it is teaching him to stand up and pee and to hold it etc...without it making a mess in my bathroom.

Is it really gross that he does this and should i be discouraging it and making him go to the toilet? I should say he doesnt do it every time, has done it maybe 5 times all up and gone from squatting like he is on a toilet to now standing and holding it properly but it just doesnt seem right him going on the lawn!

ETA: Kobe is fully toilet trained, day and night and will go to the toilet everywhere else and here at home too, just sometimes he has this novel idea to go like Max

I personally would discourage it after a story that a workmate told me yesterday about her 2 yr old boy. He will only go outside on the grass and is refusing to go inside because it's what their pets do. It's driving her nuts now trying to teach him about toilet training.

I think I wouldn't, but... gosh it's tempting to teach Max to go in the toilet!

I had been teaaching Jake that he could go outside if we were out walking. And today, in the Square, by the duck pond, down come his pants and he peed into it. shame!

lmao Liz! I let Ella pee in the bushes or next to a tree etc, out of the main pathway.. if there are no toilets around.

Robyn, I don't really see that much wrong with it.. as long as you teach him it's only okay to do #1's out there.. would be a bit yuk if you stood in a #2 outside

LMAO about the #2's.
Have the same prob with my son. I try to discourage it, i dont think its acceptable to pee/poo outside, unless there are no toilets around.
I have caught my son pulling down his undies and peeing/pooing anywhere in our back section (and we dont have a dog- so not sure where he learnt that) I made it clear that "that is yuck and we go to the toilet to do our business" I dont know how you'd explain the dog side of things tho LOL (TT the dog)

Also have reminded me of a little girl at the Plunket xmas party last year, while we were all (80+ people)sitting on the grass eating our lunch, this little girl not far from me pulls down her pants and starts peeing.
Not nice!! Toilet is better!! Urine Stinks!! (Not to forget #2's LOL)

thankfully its only #1s, he hasnt even attempted to do #2s outside. I just remember my SIL's nephew used to pee anywhere and everywhere and i thought it was gross. who knows what you end up walking in when you go outside! Silly thing is Ive tried to get him to stand up and pee when we are out and there is no toilet (like in a bush or something discreet) but he refuses so we always have to go find a toilet. Maybe this is just a phase and he will forget about it in a couple of days.....hopefully

We only let Andrew do it if he really really needs to go and one of us are in the toilet doing #2's and can't get off fast enough for him. We let him go in the bushes if we are out walking and he needs to go as well. If it is going to help with the whole standing up thing then let him get the hang of it outside and then bring him in to do it on the big toilet.

I wouldn't worry about it. Like others have said, it's probably just a phase.

Maya isn't shy to drop her knickers behind a bush if need be, which is actally a good thing coz the odd time we have been caught out (like in this cool park in Whangarei that is great except it has no toilet!) she has been happy to trot off behind a bush.
