I am 20weeks and for the last week, I have had a horrible cough that just wont go away. It's like a dry cough that is constantly tickling right in the back of my throat.
The coughing is terrible especially at night, when it seems to come on strong.
MW gave me couple of recommendations Comvita Proplis Elexir as well as some similar kind of throaties. Neither seem to really be working and it's driving me insane.
Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what remedies they used.
Also, is all this coughing bad for baby?

I had the same thing with my first pregnancy. The only thing that helped me was a big spoonful of manuka honey and a steamy bowl of hot water and vicks, I put a towel over my head and the bowl and breathed it in, then would try and sleep before the tickle got bad again.

Coughing is not bad for bubs, unless it becomes a chest infection and it goes untreated, the fever could pose a risk.

That cough lasted for weeks, then I kind of broke a rib with a big cough and the codeine they gave me stopped the cough.

This pregnancy has been cough free, yay!

Just a thought but could it be an allergy or reflux brought on by PG. My nose is continuously stuffed or running 1/2 the day and night and has been for the last month or so. Just a PG symptom, no allergies normally.

I'd suggest going to see your GP. Coughing in itself is not bad but if it becomes an infection it can become bad. There are meds the GP can give you and there are antibiotics that have been proven to be safe during pregnancy so the GP woudl be able to make an educated call. Go see them, I am sure it will be worth your while. I got horribly sick a couple of weeks ago and didn't think of seeing teh dr as I thought he wouldnt be able to do anything for me. My husband 'ordered' me to go and the dr helped heaps and I was myself again within 4 days.

Good luck

The thing to watch with coughing heaps is you don't strain a muscle. I have an annoying cough but in my case it is more likely to be hayfever. My sinus drip onto my vocal cords causing me to cough.

I had this with DS and have it again now with pregnancy no 2. It is a real pain in the *ss. My OB said that after 12 weeks there isn't so much concern about taking cough medicine/difflam etc but I can understand not wanting to. I just keep a massive glass of water by the bed and every time I get the urge to cough I take a sip of water instead. Obvious downside is that you end up having to go to the loo ten times a night.
Vicks vapodrops are OK according to my pharmacist - the menthol is a natural cough suppressant.

Thanks all for your advice, my cough today doesn't seem to be quite so bad, so maybe I am getting better (I say with my fingers and toes crossed).

I had something similar, it is a post nasal drip and sometimes I would end up throwing up from coughing which was hideous. The GPs were useless had antibiotics and prednisone and ended up there so many times. So I went to a homeopathic pharmacy and got something from the there which really helped.

I have a cold at this moment that the chemists will give me nothing for, otrivin is out for the poor nose, I have just done what Chickoin has suggested with the ol steam bowl and honey trick works quite well. A friend also got me on to lavender oil which helps relax you when your sleeping so that you dont get so stressed with the coughing and sniffing
