Topic: How long for a dirty nappy? Posted: 20 January 2011 at 7:08pm |
How long would you say is ok to leave a baby in a dirty nappy. I'm not talking on a regular basis, but in the past week just after going to sleep our baby has dirtied her nappy and changing her has woken her up and then she has stayed up for about 4 hours and is getting really overtired. Is it ok to leave it until the next feed or better to wake her up and risk it.

Personally I would change her ASAP, an over tired baby is better than a nasty red nappy rash.

My girl wont sleep with a dirty nappy, she quite often does a poo on waking or just before sleep. I would personally listen out for when she is in bed to see if she poo's just before she goes to sleep (most newborn poo you can hear it coming!)- if so then I would get her up and change her quickly before putting her back down. If she does it in her sleep then I dunno, I would have thought she would have done it while awake?

If alex does that I change him while his arms are still wrapped up, it stops him from fully waking up. And I use a warm flannel as opposed to wipes so that hes not getting something cold on his butt cause that would wake them up more too

Change a pooey nappy as soon as I can, over night I only change DD if it is a pooey one, I put a huggies nappy on her overnight and only change her if its pooey, I don't normally check her nappy in the night simply feed her and pop her back to bed.

I always changed a dirty nappy asap, overnight, only if I could smell it during a feed but often in the early days my DD was so tired during feeds I'd have to change her mid feed and pop her back on to finish the feed. I stopped changing her during the night about 2mo because she was waking right up and not going back to sleep for hours like your wee one but if it was poos then I did change it mainly because she leaked a lot, but DD has never had nappy rash, no idea why and she has sat in a dirty nappy for a while on a few occasions, not because I am lazy but simply because I haven't realised.

while ideally changing ASAP is the best idea..i get what you mean.. cause on occasion it comes down to waking them and having them take forever to sleep again and leaving the nappy on!:) I would do it occasionally but generally change asap.

I have learnt with practice to change a nappy without waking DD, otherwise I simply wait till her next feed during the day that's no longer than a couple of hours and at night I'm only going to notice when I feed her as I'm asleep the rest of the time.

I always change a dirty nappy ASAP and just deal with having to put him back to sleep if he wakes up. DS doesn't really like sitting/sleeping in one anyway so would potentially wake up or not go to sleep if I just left it.
I try to do for him what I would like for myself (if I was a baby!)...

Heh, not all babies can be changed in their sleep! Especially refluxy ones
But I'd change it as quietly and gently and possible, and if she woke right up and was cranky then I'd feed her to sleep if a bit of rocking didn't fix it. I changed at every feed until about 2 months anyway, and she often went during the feed.
