How much Folic Acid should one take prior to pregnancy? Looking on the web its all sorts of amounts ranging from 400mcg to 800mcg.

I have some 400mcg tablets but was sure that my doctor last time said to take about 700mcg?

Help!

800mcg is what they recommend women TTC should have. Most tablets off the shelf only have 300mcg I think it is. Your doctor can give you a script for 3 months worth of 800mcg tablets and they will only cost $3

Emily - I have 5mg tablets as well. They're usually prescription ones given out by a specialist I think.

I got Apo Folic Acid from the pharmacy which is 800mcg. It was about $11 for 3 months (120 tablets) - if you are not seeing your doctor for anything else, this would be a good option then you don't need to pay the doctors fee
