We are going to see a specialist at Hutt hospital about my DD's strawberry birthmark. We will be admitted into the paediatric ward for a couple of days while she gets treatment.

Has anyone stayed there before? How was the service? Is there anything I would need to take? My partner is coming too, has anyone stayed in the nursing accom? TIA

Finn was readmitted into the childrens ward at 1 week old. i stayed there with him cos he was so young and it was great. you have a TV in your room which they let you keep on as much as you want despite the sign saying it has to go off at 7 or so. if you are bfing they provide food for you, but if not you'll need DP to grab stuff for you. there is a kitchen with a fridge, microwave, and so on. they say you can leave stuff in there if it is labelled but i would trust other ppl IYKWIM. the nurses are pretty good but as with all hospitals they can be a wee bit understaffed. take pjs, toilet bag etc and you should be sweet. they have a good cafe there during normal 9-5ish.

dont know bout the nursing accom sorry.

I've stayed in the nursing accom (but in 1997!) - if it is still the same it would be ok for a short stay - communal showers and kitchens, and basic rooms with a bed, wardrobe, desk - not much else. Watch your security - I got followed onto the lift by a creepy guy who tried to see what room I was in, and people had things stolen.

Don't know about the ward first hand, but a wee girl I know just had another kind of birthmark removed and it all went really well - no complaints from her Mum. All the best for you guys.

We've been in and out of the Hutt Hospital a few times. Most of the staff are really lovely. You will need to take your own nappies, unless you want to use the old fashioned cloth nappies. There will be a bed available for one parent, and a cot for your daughter. There are no magazines kept on the ward (because of bugs), so you may want to bring some reading material. I'd also take any special toys she may have. There is a playroom where toys are available, so you don't need to bring too many toys with you. The rooms seem to be really really warm during the day, so t-shirts would be warm enough. But the rooms get cold at night.

I also don't know about the nursing accom, sorry.

Good luck with the op, hope your daughter makes a quick recovery.

Just to reassure you - Hutt hosptial has one of (if not the) best plastic surgery units in NZ. Can't rave highly enough about them and the care we recieved (we were only there for the day though, got dischaged very late at night as all the staff and us agreed it would make for a better sleep for ds). There is an indian restaurant across the road, a nice little cafe (that is geared towards hospital visitors etc) and a mobil petrol station. There are several other little eatery type places (fancy bakery included) within a very short walk. You could walk to Pak n Save or the massive westfield mall (it would take a little while but do-able), take a bus to any of those places or get there very fast if you had access to a car. Food can be expensive at the hospital cafe so I would take plenty of snack type food and drinks from home. There will be tea and coffee making facilities available to you as family. (can't really help much with your other questions sorry)

Thanks for the replys. She is not getting surgery! DD is on a drug trial to shrink her strawberry birthmark, so will be receiving medication orally.

THanks Weeheebaby- we LOVE indian, so that is a go! I will be sending DF out for food.
