Topic: I had read that basking.. Posted: 24 May 2007 at 11:47am |
I have read that basking our boobies in the sun is a good way to prepare them for breastfeeding! (Not so sure where i can discreetly do this - since I live in the heart of suburbia) Lol! Neighbours might get more then they bargained for
Does anyone else have any tips they can share with those of us who havn't breastfed before - to ease us into the transition?

Dont wear a bra for a while just before you are due.(If you can stand it, I couldn't..) Apparently helps harden the nipples...

I haven't ever really done anything to prepare. The nipples soften as a matter of course from what I can tell. Also towards the end I can't stand being without a bra cause I feel so heavy/full and like the support! I don't know if there's anything you can do to prepare, just make sure you pay good attention to how to latch baby and get your mw to help you for the first few latches, as long as you feel you need help.

There's a couple of good short dvds that lactation consultants use to teach new mums on how to latch bubs correctly and helpful hints etc that you may be able to get your hands on to have a nosey through.

Some people advise to use that nipple cream lanisol or the other one prior to bubs too. But I have no idea whether it helps or not from personal experience!

thanks busymum & kebabkat - to be honest i havn't heard the term - latch stoked to hear we aren't just left to our own devices to just wing it! Very glad to hear there are dvds to have a nosey at. i know if my mum was going to be around the early stages she could help but don't think I'll see alot of her.
I have read up alot about while I am pregnant but not alot so far about "once baby is here" this is because i havn't had a regular MW so I have been reading my way through my pregnancy & also reading alot of the helpful advice on Ohbaby!
thanks miss - I'll have a look into that nipple cream lanisol

nzpiper, yeah, that's what i thought too - but.. was a really nice sunny day today here in Auckland.. but.. still wasn't game! Lol..
did try to drop some major hints/suggestions to DH about going away for a wee trip further up north or to aussie for a couple of days to bask in the sun before bubs is here but.. no such luck!

I was told to rub my nippys with a dry towel to harden them up before bubs is born and i tried it but damb! it hurt!! and i wont be doing it again as it made no difference when i did actually try to BF (first bubs).

I was told there was nothing I could do pre-baby to prepare but I used Lansinol from day dot and I never had any problems (apart from the unavoidable tenderness). I brought the big tube of the cream and used it after every feed and I've still got HEAPS left. I know it is sold in a small tube and it should be enough. This cream is also handy for any other skin irritations

i used Naturopharm nipplemed cream while...atempting...to breastfeed and it worked wonders!!! so i have actually just bought another tube of it today! in preparation
Is Lansinol in a yellow box with flowers on it??? if so I had some of that but it didnt seem to help which is why i went to the nipplemed.

there is nothing you can do to prepare you nipples for breastfeeding. they dont need to be toughened up. breastfeeding will hurt but only if there is a reason, ie poor latch, thrush.

Agree with those first part wholeheartedly... the old wives tales do nothing.
but as for hurting... i think it does no matter what, for the first week or so. i mean the little leeches are attached to your nipples which may or may not have had that experience before! but you should always get midwife or hosp nurses to check out latch etc anyway.. just in case. (bf hurt for me for the first while due to milk taking ages to come in and no colostrum).

thanks baysmum - ouch about the dry towel!! I'm glad you have said that it doesn't work or I'd be giving it a go too!! I'll keep an eye out for this cream you mentioned - Naturopharm nipplemed.. do you know if you can get this is a smallish size? (so I can try a couple different types - to see which one will suit me best)
rubydooby, you mentioned Lansinol, miss mentioned lanisol - are these the same thing? which one is the correct (sp)..? thanks
thanks gandt, i hope this is the case with me.. would be nice not to have any issues with breastfeeding.. but guess I'm not going to know until the time comes..

hey thanks nikki , I must have been posting same time as you!
some ladies already produce colostrum at 25wks - so I've have read & been told..
I havn't noticed anything other than sensitive boobs/nipples over the past couple of weeks.. not sure if this means I am not far away from producing colostrum or if this is just another fun symptom of pregnancy..
Do most people start producing colostrum prior to birth? If so, how long before?
sorry about all my Q's!

I don't know about most people but I've had leaky boobs for a couple of months now.. but in saying that its only in the last say 3 weeks that it's got annoying enough to wanna have breast pads (cloth ones) just in case of a bad leak

I *think* most people don't leak colustrum before birth, but I could be wrong. My breasts seemed to "fill" a bit at 6mos (went up a size, and that became my maternity bra size), I had all my babies full-term and no leaking until after baby started suckling. No probs with milk coming in either.

Most people start to produce it to some extent before birth... a few drips (when squeezed ) or big leakage, depends on the person!
Lansinoh is the name of it. Pure lanolin stuff... I used another form of it Purelan, was brilliant as you don't have to wash it off before feeding.

thanks ladies - you have been fantastic so helpful!
feel that it's good to be prepared for the unknown around the corner.. great to feel a bit more informed.
Gee your closing in fast on the big day now kebakat!
busymum, hope my birth goes to full term like yours, really want to go full term & not having worries about producing milk..
nikki, I like the idea of being able to use cream that doesn't require washing off before feeding bubs!! excellent..
