I have just brought 2 new car seats and am happy with them both but neither can be rear facing.

I brought the Narnia and also the P&T tott. Both still have harnesses etc but can be converted to boosters. DS loves them both and both a simple and easy to use. Both were under $200 too.

Have a look at the Brio. They're pricey but they can rear face for ages and then converts to a 3 point front facing and then a booster. Goes up until they're about 10 all up.

We have one and love it. But it does take up a lot of room in the car so you'd have to check it out.
