 Topic: I "need" a breadmaker

What does one look for in a breadmaker? I have asked for one for my birthday next month, and now they are asking me what kind/brand etc. I have no freaken clue! Isn't that their job?

Aren't they all much of a muchness? The functions I like on our breadmaker (which isn't that fancy and we bought it s/hand), is the crust colour choice (light/med/dark) and delay start (so I can set it up in advance, say right now, for it to cook 5 minutes before our next meal).

I've heard that the ones you can stop to add extra ingredients/shape bread are good as they give you the flexibility to make more in them.
But I guess it depends on whether you'd want to make wholegrains etc.
Also some don't cook as evenly as others. Consumer does reviews on them so maybe you could ask someone who has a sub if they know which one was recommended.

i got an l v martin one love it - it can do rice and jams and other stuff as well as bread... but i've only made bread in it.... and i dont know if they do them anymore either!

My grandparents gave me their old one but I never use it coz it didn't come with instructions or a recipe book so I second those things being important.
My sister has one of the ones where you can add cheese, fruit etc. in during the process to make different types of bread, hers beeps to tell you when to add the bits and pieces.

Ooo my dad has a subscription to consumer online, I'll have a look for you.
I'd love a breadmaker but I know if we had one I'd eat FAR too much bread cos it's just soooooooo yummy fresh and hot!!

My original one came from a swap meet and had no instructions but I just used it on the basic bread mode and never had a problem. My new one is a Breville and although is one of the less technical models out there, bakes a darn nice loaf of bread and can also be used to make cakes etc.

Ours is a Breville too, it rocks! Although I must confess it is getting a little dusty as I am trying to cut down on carbs...

I have a basic Breville as well (less than $100) and it does everything I need. It beeps to tell you when you can add extra ingredients if you want.

I had an LV martin one which was brilliant, I got it for my 21st birthday and worked it to death. My mum and dad just got a cheapy from the Warehouse and it worked well too.

I had the Sunbeam one... it was ok but then I bought the GEORGE FOREMAN one it was $300 odd but I love it! the bread comes out fantastic, quite a bit better than the sunbeam

I had a look at the Cascade one today at The Warehouse, it was huge, but it was like $70. It looked really easy to use though. I checked out a Breville one at Dick Smith and it was $119 and not as big.
