This is a bit of a random question, but can IBS flare-ups affect early pregnancy in any way??

For those who don't know - IBS = Irritable Bowel Syndrome

 TIA

   I wouldn't think I would.

Are you taking anything for it? We've had a lot of success with IBS Support. Also Aloe vera juice, but thats not recommended during pregnancy.

No I don't take anything - I have it pretty much under control with diet (I've been diagnosed for 8 years now) but last night just HAD to have some Jaffa Thins. Don't think I'll be trying that again. I woke up this morning with the cramps and wind, and it's so nervewracking because you can't tell where the cramps are actually coming from. And whether the cramps will cause my uterus or anything else to cramp.

I didn't have any trouble with it in the first trimester but found in the between 12-20 weeks it gave me a bit of grief as your gut becomes sluggish about then in pregnancy anyway hence why a lot of woman suffer constipation. I had an urgent scan at 18 weeks as I was doubled over in pain but Bubba was fine and it was just my delightful IBS playing up!! But you're right it's hard to know! I don't take anything for it, although the OB who did my scan said I could take Buscopan if it was really bad, but definately run that past your midwife/pharmacist first as you are still only in the 1st trimester.

Congratulations by the way!!!

   Hey Kate,

generally no it can't cause any issues in early pregnancy as far as I'm aware. The only thing that can be an issue is if you have something like I do, where if there's too much pressure on the uterus often the blood supply can be cut off. In that instance, the pressure from a build up or pains from IBS can affect the uterus, but it's rare. I have had a lot of pain both times around from the IBS and so far it hasn't affected anything other than making you worry a bit. I'm sure you'll be fine hun, and yup it's very normal to get a flare up in early pregnancy as your body is changing so much. The good thing though is that a lot of sufferers actually find relief further down the track and you can eat a lot of stuff you normally can't - I'm looking forward to that again!

Thanks emz, that's a huge relief. I am looking forward to some relief - some things I never used to eat are now ok (like pizza!!!) but others that I used to be fine with (Jaffa Thins) now set me off.
