Hi mummies.
Good on you with the vino Rowie - you deserve it! Just remember - one day this phase will be a memory.
Scary Mummydee - glad to hear your little girl was okay.
So jealous Bext - enjoy having your hair done. It's amazing how far a bit of pampering goes when you have a little one taking up most of your time.
We have had a bit of excitement here (that's why I have been MIA for a while). I got a cracked nipple and developed mastitis about 12 days ago, big hot sore breasts. Midwife got me antibiotics really quickly, but they didn't kick in for a couple of days by which time I'd got quite sick (temp, headache, flu-like symptoms and all the top layer of skin peeled off my breast from being so hot) started to feel better again, but mastitis just stayed the same. Antibiotics finished and it all got worse again, with large bulbous lumps formed over the top of my boob - looked like a friggen nightmare. Very very hard to feed, and expressed for some of the time, and used a nipple shield at others. Over the weekend the lumps actually burst through my skin and leaked milk, pus and blood all down my body (sorry that was probably TMI) was in contact with midwife throughout, and had been prescribed more antibiotics but it was all a bit too little too late. We ended up in hospital where they organised for an operation to clean out and pack the whole area within a few hours. Looking back we should of been there ages before, but being a first timer I just didn't know how bad mastitis would get and didn't know that all of that was out of the ordinary. Turned out that I had a couple of different strains of staphlycoccus that had entered through the cracked nipple, and mastitis at the same time. Bizarre I know, but so pleased that we are on the road to recovery now!! Lucky for me my partner has been so wonderful, he took care of me and baby throughout the whole lead up, then looked after Jasmine while I was in theatre and has been running around after us ever since! I hope that none of you are suffering with abcesses - they are kind of a hidden evil, and if mine hadn't been so close to the surface and actually exploded I might still be plodding on, thinking that this was just part of what happens. Even mastitis alone is a major ordeal. If things are getting tough - ask for help. Lactation consultants in my experience are fabulous, and I'm told that La Leche League is really good too - I will be looking them up next.
Hope you are all doing well, and yay for July - our babies are growing up so fast

Quick check in to let you all know I'm alive lol
Had our last midwife visit yesterday :( Have to admit I'm going to miss seeing her, but I'm sure we'll stay in touch. She really is more of a friend than a midwife.
Lucan is up to 4040gms (10pound) so doing ok but not great. His weight for age is low, where as his height for age is high. So he's going to be tall and thin, like the twins.
He's still only sleeping 2-3 hours at the most and seems to be awake just about all day which is really wearing on me, hence the fact I'm not posting much. Plus trying to run round after the twins as well, so It really just seems hard work to try and string more than 2 words together and my typos are atrocious lol. Thank goodness for the backspace.
He's smiling and starting to try and talk to us which is really gorgeous and he has the most amazing smile. The pic I put on facebook really is nothing compared to the smiles I haven't been able to catch on camera.
But - although I'm exhausted, I love our little man so much. He is really a happy little boy when fed and changed lol. We had a few days last week that were 24 hours of non stop screaming. Not sure what was going on but wondering if it was the fact that I ate chocolate. Something I couldn't do at all while I was pregnant. We still have the screaming moments (well hours) but not 3 days solid. OMG I was beside myself.....rowie I agree, it shatters the nerves. I think the worst is the not being able to actually do anything to help. I felt terrible like it was all my fault, and if it was the chocolate then I guess it was.....but we don't know if that was it or not and Im not eating it again just in case
So sorry I haven't done personals - I know I suck and it's not that I don't think of you all. Just that I'm too tired.
Hopefully soon I'll be able to catch up more often :)

Aydee - I was told that chocolate (along with coffee and something else that i"m too tired to remember) 'can' cause wind problems. Because I couldn't eat it when I was pregnant (even watching someone eat it made me feel ill) people wondered if that was what was affecting Lucan. Unfortunately because I'm so tired I think I was looking for a sugar fix lol
Well last night we were asleep for 2 and a half hours and up for 2 hours each time.......arggggghhhhhh this had better improve soon

hi june mummies
big hugs out to the colicy mums. HARD work! sorry, i don't have any wise words or tips!
We are into week three and seem to have a routine sorted. We are GIna Ford fans in this house and Ollie seems to be embracing it!
I still owe you guys a birth story - time seems to fly when you are feeding, changing, burping, trying to fit in a shower, brush your teeth or even work out how you can pee when bubs needs your attention at the same time!
Keep trucking on gals - next thing you know they will be asking for the car keys........

Daena - we do a combo of tummy time on his sheepskin and on our chests..it's all about building those neck muscles up to start with perhaps Gia would like that better to get her used to it? Plus it can be lovely skin to skin time too
Wow scary stuff for some of you mummies! Hugs!
For those with windy/colicky babes - have you tried wheat bags on bubs tummy? We started doing that weeks ago with Noah when he had really bad wind and it seems to help him and everytime he has a bad tummy we heat the wheat bag and put it between us and him while he's lying on our chest and it calms him down a lot quicker than usual. Also because we side sleep him we sometimes put him to bed partially propped up on one too...just a suggestion
Noah is finally over the 4kg mark!! So stoked although I can't believe he's 2 months old already!
Am not liking this weather today it's damp and miserable and the fire doesn't seem to be helping!

Thanks SD and for the advice on the foods - I have a really fussy baby when feeding but she only fusses really badly on one side and I thought I've been eating a bit of dark chocolate every day pretty much so hoping it's not that. But that doesn't explain why she is only fussy on one side. Might just be lack of milk supply on that side and she fights to get off and kicks her feet ...aaarggghh really hard work to get her to feed well.
Poor Ashley still wasn't putting on weight last week so I had to start topping her up with formula and now she needs formula at most feeds to satisfy her hunger but I'm still doing my best to persevere with the BF. We had the weigh in on Monday though and Ashley's just passed her birth weight - HOORAY!! With all the conflicting advice given from so many different people we got a lactation consultant in last week and she fixed my latch, gave me a double breast pump and lots of advice to help the milk come in. I'm taking domperidone, blessed thistle, fenugreek, drinking ginger beer and eating lots and lots, plus feeding regularly so if all this doesn't work then at least I know I tried everything. Anyone else got any tips !!!! I feel like a milking shed and not doing much else apart from feeding but hey, it's not forever.
Jess3 - that is a horrendous experience with the mastitis etc, glad to hear you have such a supportive partner.
Dino - thanks for the food advice and that's cool that you're getting out - I haven't driven for over 3 weeks now too! What a treat it will be to get out and escape... hopefully soon. Hope you enjoy your trip tomorrow.
Nannyabbey - I hear you on the whole fitting in stuff like showers, mine are about every two days at the mo! My friend said to me 'shower in a can luv' !! ha
What age should you start doing tummy time...?
Hope everyone is having a good day. My aim is to get out for a half hour walk before darling munchkin is ready for her next feed

Wow if those are all the foods you have to avoid it doesn't leave you with much!! I've been thinking a lot about what I eat and breast milk lately due to Alex's reflux and nothing I have cut out so far has made any difference. If I eat something I have to digest it through my gut first for it to get into my bloodstream and then into my milk. So it seems a bit remote that particular foods can have an impact. I can understand caffeine and alcohol though as they are stimulants.
Aydee - have you thought of taking her to a chiropractor or cranial osteopath if she's fussing on one side. Worked a treat for DD. You can start tummy time right from birth by lying them on your chest (someone else suggested that too) or after their bath, lie them on their tum and massage their backs and bottoms with some oil.. great for nappy rash too.
Jess3 - you poor, poor woman. That sounds like a complete nightmare. I hope you're feeling better. Mastitis is worse than giving birth I reckon! At least labour is done in a day.
Well no one in this house is sleeping much today. DD was coughing so hard she threw up in her bed and DS is mucking around with sleeps.
Is anyone else using pre-fold nappies? I bought 18 new ones for Alex of the smaller size and they sem a bit too small for him. I know he's big but he's not that big! They keep leaking into the wraps..

Hey mummies, quick question - someone talked about a teat that resembles the breast better than a lot of the Avent or Tommee Tippee teats, therefore making it a bit harder for the baby to suck. Can someone remind me what it's called!?
thanks

Aydee - if she is fussy on one side, have you tried pillows etc. Luc hates feeding on the left side but I figured out that i actually hold him a little differently so now alwys use the breastfeeding pillow

Hey all! Rowie, thanks so much for talking about the colic evenings, it's so good to know there are others out there (even tho it sucks that there are poor others out there, IYKWIM). I was beside myself on Monday after a particularly hideous weekend of the usual colic evenings (6pm til 11pm is a nightmare here) and crappy nights of Sam being up every two and a half hours, then me spending about an hour after each night feed getting up and down to wind him over and over, so on Monday I went to the cranial osteopath, a homeopath, and the GP!!! Cranial Osteo basically said since we hadn't had any positive change over the three sessions we've had, to go to GP and get Gaviscon. GP said colic and reflux, gave script for Gaviscon but said it prob wouldn't be that helpful so to come back and he'd give us a script for something to reduce bowel/stomach spasms. Homeopath was confident she would sort it, and "prescribed" us Camomilla tabs and caraway seed "tea" / homemade gripe water. I'm giving the homeopathic stuff a go first. Have read lots about colic, including research reviews into what helps, and basically nothing is proven as an effective treatment except hitting the four month mark!! This has been going on nightly since three weeks, so I really really really hope that it magically disappears when Sam matures a little more
On the plus side, days are much nicer with the EASY routine and tummy sleeping. Whew! And, when Sam isn't screaming, he is soooooooo delish, making lots of cute noises and smiling heaps! He loves looking out the window, and chats away to the curtains, even smiling and laughing at them! Also has started batting his hands at things like his favorite Lamaze peacock toy - so cool to see him trying to do stuff!
Jess3 - OMG hun, my boobs hurt just reading that!! Thanks for sharing tho, I will def be more aware, and get onto things quickly if I notice anything amiss. Wow, that sounded awful!
SD - Hugs hun, sounds soooo hard. I am struggling atm with Sam's colic and reflux and patchy sleeping, so I can't even imagine how you are doing it with twins too! You are soooooo amazing!
Re: cutting out foods. Research into colic didn't find that it made much of a difference. I am thinking of cutting out dairy if nothing else works, GP reckons if it will help, it will show within 5 days. My sister is dairy intolerant, so it could def be a factor. But I'm holding off atm cos I'm afraid of losing weight and not being able to keep up my BF-ing if I cut it! I lost all my pregnancy weight within a month of having Sam, and am back to my tiny 46kg size. I really really don't want to lose any more weight (I was hoping I'd keep some of my preg weight! no such luck!), and I eat loads of dairy so I'm afraid if I cut it out I'll fade away! Also, Sam eats loads, and spew half of it up, so I have to eat heaps to keep up my supply. So cutting dairy will be a last resort for me! I will stop eating choc as of today tho, see if that does anything.
Re: tummy time - Sam's always loved it, we started it when he was about three weeks old after MW advised us to. To start with, he only did it for a couple of minutes, just until he cried then we stopped it. Now he loves it and will be happy on his tummy for a good 10 mins, and we still just stop it when he yells to say he's had enough!
Hugs to everyone! Cross your fingers that Sam goes back to his usual 5.5 hours then 3.5 hours tonight, otherwise I may die of tiredness! Tink

Thanks for all that info Tink, it's great hearing what other people have tried. We also have an evening terror but DD was the same and as you say at 4 months it was all smiles and plain sailing. I also tried cutting out the dairy for 10 days with no change (I'm dairy intolerant but can over the years have got to know my limits) other than me missing out on protein. I'm a littlie too and I feel like I'm fading away a bit at the moment but still 3 kg above pre-pregnancy weight which is good. Maybe small women get spewy babies LOL. Started the losec about 10 days ago without much improvement on that front either. So I guess it's just a matter of riding it out and doing a lot of washing. Bibs are my best friend right now.
Aydee - I just bought the Nuk silicone anti-colic teat with a small hole and it fits the medela bottle. DS took it straight away, so different from DD who wouldn't. So I'm inspired to express twice a week to keep him keen on it.
Is anyone else still bleeding at 6 weeks? I'm going to see my GP this arvo as it's still red, but not much and I keep getting backache and cramps like AF is returning. Also woke up feeling rather flu-like today

Afternoon mums!
Hope mums and babies are all well!
Haven't posted for a while, been a long week.
Well after blood tests and scans and numerous doctor appointments, the doctor finally decided that my bleeding was the result of retained membranes from my placenta...but thankfully they came away naturally and bleeding finished last Thursday....but came Monday I was bleeding again, haven't bothered with Doctor for me again decided that this time it might actually be my period and wll wait out and if not better will go see doctor on Monday!
Blood tests came back to show I was horribly anaemic...so more Iron tablets.
Poor Layne is sick, has bronchiolitis Started on Saturday night, woke up from his afternoon sleep with a slight wheeze which just deteriorated. Sunday morning we saw doctor who was lovely, told us what to watch for and if he got worse or at any stage we were worried to bring him. We were getting up every 2 hours during the night to check on him.
Then Tuesday he seemed to be worse and went pale and a little grey around his lips so took him to the doctor who then called an ambulance that took us to Taupo Hospital, where we waited for another one to take us to Rotorua. We finally got to Rotorua Hospital at 8pm, were seen by 3 different people and then admitted to the childrens unit at 9 but waited in ED until 10.30 for a bed....was so exhausted, Layne was so unsettled...guess hospitals could do that. The nurses were great and so were the doctors. They monitered him all night checking breathing, oxygen levels and heart rate. Thankfully all stats stabilised and 3pm yesterday afternoon we were aloud home!
Still having to keep an eye on him and hes still very chesty and still wheezy but they think the worse is over....hes a very happy little boy considering! So glad to be home though, his feeding has picked up and hes sleeping properly again :)
Plunket came today Layne is now 12lb5oz (5.58kg) and 60cm long, she said hes done very well considering he is sick....wonder how heavy he would have been if he wasn't.
DH and his brother has a competition going between their son's. His son is 6 weeks older than Layne and when Layne was born he was 11lb (7lb13oz at birth), so he had a 4lb lead and he is now 13lb8oz and Layne isn't following behind by much now :)
Not much else to report really, haven't caught up on all the posts yet so will go back and read as long as Layne stays sleeping.

hi all
Jess3 - wow, thanks for sharing about mastitis, i wasn't aware how bad it was. i hope you are feeling betternow and it is great how your DP took over.
Debbe, hugs to you. I am sending good twin vibes to your girls! our two are terrible atm and I feel myself getting stressed out by them by at least 10am when they are home - not the best feeling in the world.
Tink, have you tried the colimed spray you can get at the chemist? this used to work well for joel's colic.
Jessiesmum, hope to see you at our auckland mummy meet up
Biddy, poor Layne. I know how horrible Bronchiolitis is. Zavier got it less than a month after being discharged from SCBU and spent a whole week in the hospital. I was so worried about him. I still do worry about him getting sick!!
We have yet to do the jabs. I should have done it tuesday but have been so busy lately trying to organise getting the old car fixed, wof, rego and now tomorrow taking it to Turner's car auctions to sell, so have put it off. Maybe on Monday!!
Koby is great. I have just rung mothers choice to order some new bolts (lost 3) so i can finish putting up his cot. I know that he will sleep better there as he is touching the bassinet sides!!
Is anybody else's baby very quiet? our guy sleeps so much still!! but on saying that he can be quite vocal when he sees his mobile lol.
re bleeding. mine stopped a few weeks ago and very naughty we are already 'back on the horse' if you will. I guess the main thing to think of now is contraception.. ick!!
Well off to have some lunch and get Joel. We have parent teacher interviews today so school is out early.
Hugs to you all!
(sorry if i missed anybody, I have read but when it comes to type i always miss out what i wanted to say!!)

Thanks everyone for all your supportive, kind words. It's so nice to be able to talk to people who have little babies at the same time.
Though we have had tough times I have to say I just love being a Mummy - I could stare at my little girl all day long. I'm sure you all know what I mean.
SD - hang in there - you are doing a great job! I don't know how you ladies with twins get by. I love taking care of my little girl, but definately have my hands full with just the one! Let alone twins and then some!
Dino1 - how was your Mums group? I'm trying to find out about that up here as it's really nice to spend time with people who have little ones around the same age.
Aydee - good on you for persevering with BFing, it sounds like you are really giving it your all! I found my baby was really fussy on one side all the time (even before things went pear-shaped). Maybe some of us just have one side that is better than the other??
Tink - good luck with your strategies to tackle the colic - something in there must work right!! Jasmine is up for between 5 and 8 hours of an evening but she doesn't scream, just feeds and looks around, or naps, then she goes down for a 5-7 hour sleep so I count myself very lucky.
Jessiesmum - Hope your little ones start to feel better soon! We have a lovely pile of 're-usable nappies' all ready to go, but people keep bringing us packs of newborn disposables and we want to use them up while Jasmine can still fit them. Kinda good not to have to worry about the extra washing atm though. I'm nearly finished bleeding, at 3 and a half weeks. Hopefully your doctor can help.
Biddy - you poor thing. Hope that Layne is feeling better and that you are all getting back on track. It's hard enough having a new baby without any extra complications.
Bext1 - Wow lucky you having such a quiet bubba. You really seem to be so on top of everything - good on you! Makes me think maybe one day I could manage another one One day, far off in the distant future. Birth and breast troubles have faded, but not that much yet

Sorry to hear about your friend that passed in that accident Bex! Heard that on the news this morning, so sad! Her poor family and little boy!
Wow Jess3, that is scary! No-one has ever said it could ever get that bad!
I could just stare at Layne all day, get the biggest smile and happiest feeling just thinking about him.
I am so much more emotional now since birth lol. Really love being a mum, so rewarding especially when he smiles and laughs and just chats away.
lol to be honest I am already thinking about the next one...crazy aye! lol
SD- have you thought about going to an osteopath..I think..someone told me they are great for unsettled babies and for those that struggle with wind, they might just need to be re-a-ligned from birth. My plunket nurse metioned it.
Jessiesmum- I was having trouble with bleeding it never stopped, then began heavy and bright red again and then presented with clots. Doctor was great checked mycervix and did scans and blood tests and decided that I had retained membanes from birth but they cleared naturally by last Thursday. Although as I mentioned before I started bleeding again on Monday but no clotting so hopefully just my period returning, wll wait out this week and if no improvement will see doctor again monday. Hope everything goes ok!
Good on you Bex lol, DH and I are still to 'get back on the horse' lol waiting out the bleeding etc and to be honest I am rather nervous! I've been back on contraception since Layne was 4 weeks.
MW put me on cerazette another mini-pill, costs a bit but decided it wasn't much compaired to what a baby costs. and not to mention about 144 condoms....not like they worked so well last time lol.
Aydee- theres a teat called chu chu that fits the medela bottles as well, Squoggs said shes uses them and finds them great. You can get them from the breastmates website. We have them and also the closer to nature from tommee tippee my little boy is so picky that he takes both just not consistently, so 1 day he might like one but not the other! theres only so many times I want to transfer breast milk from one bottle to the other!
Also we have had Layne on his stomach since birth, the MW told us to, he absolutely loves it and his floor time on his back giggles away and chats. I think we only did it for short times to start with like Tink? mentioned I think and we also take him off when he gives a little cry to say hes had enough.
Yay Cheryl on Noah's weight gain! And I can't believe how fast the time goes!
Does anyone kind of miss being pregnant but don't really understand why? Because I do.....but don't have one idea why....maybe because I understood why I couldn't fit my clothes.....I am so missing being able to fit any of my pants, which are all jeans. Over maternity jeans and track pants....might actually have to take myself shopping.
Speaking of shopping I think I am addicted to online shopping, and its all stuff for either Laynes room or baby stuff! Poor Visa lol.
Will post pics of Layne's room once it is finally finished just waiting on a mobile. Does anyone know where I could get blue book shelves, preferably ones not higher than windows/bed height? I can't find any.
Sorry if I have missed any personals! And sorry bout the long post...feel like I am finally caught up!

The memory of the birth has faded but it's those newborn-lack-of-sleep weeks that I'm not too keen on going through again for a while! We'll probably start thinking about #2 once Noah is 1...maybe 1 1/2
Aydee – yay for Ashley passing her birth weight. Mum always told me that a bit of beer (some say dark beer like guiness but she said anything should work) can help with milk production – something to do with the yeast and how it’s made?? Also the teat that is most like a nipple is the Tommee Tippie Closer to Nature range.
RE: Foods – I can’t have cauliflower anymore, I’ve had cauliflower & cheese twice and both times we had really bad nights. I thought chocolate was effecting him too but I've had a bit over the last couple of days and it does seem to have had any effect thank goodness!
Tink – I was reading in an American magazine called Pathways the other day about chiropractic care being effective in helping with colic, might be something else to try? So cool about Sam batting his hands towards his toys already
Aww Biddy – poor wee Layne!
Had another coffee group with the antenatal class ladies and it was really good! Ended up staying for like 2 1/2 hours and chatted about all sorts of things.
Does anyone else have sore wrists? Mine bother me every now and then depending on how I'm holding N or carrying the capsule etc. Emmi from the May thread said her doc told her it's quite common in new mums - that's something they don't tell you before hand huh. Could have done some strengthening exercises or something LOL

Cheryl- I had horribly sore wrists when I first started BF as I was holding Layne and shaping my breast and my hands would stay like that until he had finished. Not so bad now though but I still find I continue shaping my breast while he feeds, theyre too big for his face lol.
I don't carry the capsule too much but when I do I notice more strain on my back....haven't really recovered from Labour etc, have been meaning to see physio.
