Topic: kids bags! Posted: 09 January 2010 at 12:50pm |
okay so last year at the parent and child show i found these really great school bags that were made in germany but so expensive...
link
they have so many features that i feel would be good for young developing bodies but the money - ouch! They did have a plainer range and for $290 i could get a bag, wallet, filled pencil case, smaller unfilled pencil case and a sports bag... but i still dont know!
anyway what i want to know is what do you all do for your kids school bags? is it better to buy cheaper more often while they are in primary school?

My dad and stepmum bought an el-cheapo bag for jake for his birthday. it is wearing out on the bottom. he has been at school 6 weeks!! i think it was $20. But in thinking - will he have 10 bags over his primary school 'career" therefore justifying the price of those bags?
And i could see a lot of the designs being too babyish once he gets older. tbh, I would just get the cheaper ones and replace as necessary

I usually get the girls ones from rebel sport when they are in a half price sale - and to be honest, they get sick of them before they wear out!! I couldnt spend that much on one bag - for sure they would want a change along the way.

We bought Janaya's first one from strandbags. It was $59 from memory but lasted her all year (in fact it is still in tact, just a wee bit grubby!)
Her second one was $20 and lasted 3 weeks!

How much is actually going into his school bag? Could you find a cheaper one with a waist buckle to support the weight of the bags contents? Does he walk to school or is he only carrying it for a small amount of time.
I think if he is carrying quite a weight, looks after things and is a careful kind of child, and you couldn't find anything similar, then I'd spend the money. I only say careful kind of child because I'd hate to spend the money to find it damaged in some random way.
I'm a PT though so anal about weight distribution and muscle development, and aware of what heavy school bags etc can do to spines and posture. Although normally it's far worse once kids hit intermediate/high school.
It's a hard one!

I've seen a lot of kids with the wheelie suitcase style bags as well - I don't know how practical they are but I guess they save the stress on the back?

I have to buy 2 school bays this year, I spend $40 or less each in them.
DS1 has a good quality bag that has got a hole in the bottom, from being dragged, thrown around.
You need to make sure they are at least big enough to fit in a book bag, lunch, jumper, raincoat, hat etc, without being to weighty.
I let my kids pick there own ones (with my help) DS2 is only starting school now so he wants a transformers one.
