Hi everyone,

I regularly read the forums on this page but rarely post anything, but I am having a problem and could use your help.

I am a new Mum to a two week old baby boy who's nappies seem to leak every time! What on earth am I doing wrong? He is happy and healthy otherwise and at his weigh in on day 9 had already regained his birth weight and put on 100 grams. He weighed 3.4 kilos on day nine.

This is causing a lot of washing and bassinet sheet changes in this household, which is a pain especially in the middle of the night.

Looking forward to your suggestions.

Hi Nicci.

What sort of nappies are you using?

My little man would leak a lot when he was little, one thing that helped was making sure his penis wasn't off to the side when I put the nappy on. Hope this helps.

I would also fold down the top of the front of the nappy - the midwife showed me this and it appears to work well.

The only time we've had trouble with leaking nappies is when they're getting too small - maybe you need to go up a size.

We found in those early days sposies leaked all the time. The next size up helped a bit but we were glad to get our lil guy into cloth - no more leaks then.

Make sure his willy is pointing down, otherwise they can leak out the top. I have found that you need to upsize a good KG before what they recommend on the nappy.
Congratulations on your little boy

Check that the frills at the leg holes are pulled out properly and try get it as snug as possible around the top of the legs. Otherwise, try not to stress too much as he'll fatten up in the thighs really quickly and that helps a LOT.

When Kryssi was a baby she was quite tall and slender and I needed to try different types of nappies so I could cross them over for a better fit. You have to change Giggles (for example) more regularly than Huggies but in the early days there are so many changes anyway that Huggies aren't often worth their money until 3mos. Probably worth trying different brands.

Yep Isla never fitted Huggies newborn. Definatly go up a size or try Treasures Ultra Newborn. They are bigger than the Huggies and we found them much better.

Huggies Newborn should still fit your baby, who sounds like a similar size to what my daughter was at birth. How often are you changing his nappies? Occasionally we get leakage too. It tends to be when we've not put the nappies on tightly enough, or she needs a bigger size. I usually change them once in the night to prevent leakage also.

Check that the things inside the nappy are pulled out.. I don't know what they're called - leak guards? They're at the side of the middle bit. We always used to lift them up with our finger and make sure they were sitting snug against the leg.

If it's leaking out the top it's probably a size issue though

Rowan was out of Huggies Newborn by 4 kg and really should have been out of them sooner. IMO the newborn size for Huggies is rubbish and you would be better using Treasures. But once he gets to the next size up Huggies is good. (Though we mainly use cloth anyway)

james leaked through all nappies until he was 4wks, the amount of pee that comes out of a boy is shocking.
after having a daughter i was shocked

if i used a sposie i put one of his pilchers over them and yeah check the size is right, my kids never fitted newborn nappies at that age so we were in the next size up.

maybe also try a different brand?? huggies leaks real bad with both my kids, treasures was the only brand that worked in the sposie department and cloth

Our little man was 2.785kg at birth and Huggies were useless!!!  They were fine once his little legs fattened up a bit.  Treasures wern't too bad but the best for us were the signature range.  Now he is a big boof, we still use signature range during the day and huggies at night. (huggies keep him drier but that is only coz he sleeps a lot longer during the night now)

Awesome! We had a whole night of a dry bed last night!! We tried Treasures and noticed that they seemed a lot bigger than the Huggies newborn. I also made close attention to the leak guards and made sure his penis was pointing down when the nappies went on. I was really pleased to hear that this wasn't an unusual problem. Thanks again.
