    Posted: 27 March 2010 at 8:57pm
Hi there

I am flying long haul to the UK in May/June when my DS will be 10-11 months old. Just wondering what meals/snacks are provided on board for babies, as in, what are they? Last time we flew he wasn't on solids. I guess I can bring some jars but he isn't a big fan of them. I should perhaps give him some jars occasionally to get him used to them before we fly....

Can't think of anything worse than a long haul flight (on my own - DH isn't coming) with not only a tired baby but also a hungry one!!

I'm kinda wondering the same thing but for when I fly to Oz. Especially seeing we're dairy free as well.

Do you think they'll actually provide food for an infant? I'm thinking they won't.

Yep, I am fairly sure they do provide meals - on long haul anyway - I remember being offered one when Sam was 3 months and laughing to myself at the thought of him having his own tray of food!! - but not sure about a shorter flight to Oz. Might be worth contacting Air NZ to check...but also hoping some nice Ohbaby addict will have some info!!

I think it probably depends if you are paying for a seat for him or not? If you are just doing the on your lap/bassinet option I would have thought they wouldn't offer a meal? It might be on their website... I just had a quick look and found this:
Long-Haul Services

You are welcome to bring your own baby food and feeding equipment on board your flight. Our cabin crew are happy to prepare, heat and wash bottles whenever needed, however please note there are no sterilising facilities on board the aircraft. If you do not wish to carry your own supply of baby food on board, please let us know when you make your reservation and we will supply an infant meal. Customers travelling with a baby on these services also receive a baby care kit containing wipes, baby lotion, a bib and a souvenir teddy bear. We also have a limited supply of drinking cups and milk formula available for emergency use

Hi MistyMolly
We were offered meals to our girls when flying LH at 11months and we hadn't bought seats for them. That was with AirNZ, we flew with Lufthansa on the second leg and nothing was offered.

I can't remember what exactly what the dinner contained. I know the breakfast had omelette, sausage, yoghurt and fruit.

I can PM you what the girls get next week ( we're flying AirNZ to Heathrow) as I think it's the same meal.

AandCsMum, Last time we were dairy and gluten free and there are no options offered for infants so we just packed jars, cereal and snacks.

we flew to thailand from japan when Jake was eight months old. we had requested a baby meal and we got chilli shrimp on rice...i would bring your own food just in case. Also was talking to somone recently about a flight they were on which was delayed by five hours, and the woman in question had no "spare" food with her (all in her suitacase). Might pay to have a fair amount of food.

On AirNZ to london they give you a little pack with a few watties jars, DS was 14 months old when we got them and was in the bassinette. I know when we went and he was over 2 I prebooked the kids meal on line for him so you could try that,

ShelleyBR - at 14 months was your DS able to sleep in a bassinet? I assumed that at that age they would be too big.

Tishy - hope flight goes well and yes, it would be great to hear what they offer this time for baby meals.
Thanks

The bassinettes go to the youngest babies first and then it is a first come first serve. The one on the flight held up to a max of 12kilos which he was just under and they were a bit wary but I got away with it - just as well as I was travelling on my own with him and didn't fancy a 30 hour flight with a toddler on my lap.

I was thinking more length than weight I guess. I too am going on my own and have already done it once already - dreading it again to be honest - but it is the only way if we want to see family etc . Just have to grin and bear it!!

Friends of ours have just been to NZ with their 12mo DD but they flew SIA not Air NZ. They got REAL food for her (not jars) - I was amazed! Mashed food and "finger" food but there was meat + 3 veg and then a little "lunch box" with snacks as well. Jars are usually available if you need them too.

No idea how that compares with Air NZ sorry, but had to share

Good luck for the flight. Doing it solo is such hard work. Will be worth it when you get there though!

We are going to fly emirates as they are the only airline that I can get direct flights with a different entry & exit point.

Interesting that they supply food on LH flights good though.

I flew emirates long haul this week from Wellington to London.

they offered me two tins (heinz baby food) and some baby juice in 32 hours ... we also got a little care pack with some wipes,l a bib and lotion. nothing special.

I would suggest taking some extras.. a couple of the pouches with the screw top are handy as you can reseal and save some if it doesnt all get eaten.
take some kruskits and a sippy cup too.

Good Luck...
we been in the UK for 4 days and DS is a total mess...trying my best to get him back into his usual routine... and to top it all off he has major bug with vomitting and diarreah for the past 16 hours :(

We flew to Perth last month with Air NZ, our daughter was 15 months and they FORGOT her meal on the way over, even though we called the day before to double check. Luckily we did take our own snacks, and she shared my meal. On our way home, they FORGOT AGAIN. Talk about useless.. Happy ending though, they managed to rustle something up for her.

I would def. recommend taking your own food, you never know what might happen, its good to have a supply for between-meal snacks too, keeps them quiet

We flew with AirNZ last year and they were brilliant. You will get the meal before yours too and you can ask them to hold yours until he's asleep if you need to. We were given pretty much normal plane food but the veges were mashed, there was yoghurt and fruit. And they give you some nappies, wipes and lotion when you board too. We also took some jars, spoons and snacks.
The bassinets on the new planes are much better than the old ones, they are higher up and quite deep (I had to stand to check Lil and im 173cm!) and are sort of hanging so no hard base. Lil was 13mths when we went and filled it up but she sleeps with her legs bent. She was only about 10kgs then tho.
If you are travelling alone I'd recommend using a sling, wrap or front/back pack. And ask the ground staff for help with collecting your luggage when you come off the plane.
Oh, and airnz have playhouse disney on their tvs so lily watched a bit of that too!!

Ooooh a free teddy bear!!!!   Wow.

My mum travelled LOTS with me and my bro when we were very young. Between Oz, UK from the age of 10days!
Anyways- she has so many funny stories.
She said one trip she went to the doc to get something to help me and bro sleep... but they had the opposite effect! My bro ran up and down the isle wailing and screaming and laughing like he was on speed for about 12 hours straight- then got distracted with the projector..... back in those days- remember that..... and then spent 2 hours making shadow puppets on the movie screen.
Gotta laugh really!!! We were little monkeys- my poor mother.

However- If I was travelling with DS- I would take some Kids Calm. Its a Chamomile extract mix made by Kiwi Farm. It works a treat w DS. just calms him down. So it may help to relax your wee one, and even help him sleep? It DEFFINATELY wont have the opposite effect I promise!

I remember getting colouring books and a model aeroplane at some point too.

if you're on a flight that offers meals to the adults then you'll be able to choose either a baby meal or a childs meal - but you have to make sure your travel agent requests it or they might miss out completely.

the baby meal is usually jarred food, but the child's meal is a bit more substantial - fruit pottles and proper food. you can get a childs meal even if you haven't paid for a seat for them so if they're past the mush stage i would definately opt for a childs meal.

still take a small supply of your own food though - there's no guaranteeing your baby will want to eat what's provided!!

Thanks for posting this question mistymolly - has helped me a lot. We are heading to the UK with Emirates in May when DD will be 5.5 months and I am starting to worry already! Hoping that I can put off solids until we get back but will have to be prepared I guess.

Anyway - just to threadjack a bit - do they provide sheets for the bassinet or should I pack some in my already huge carry on bag?

NandC all the airlines we've flown with have never provided sheets for bassinet, usually just a small fleecey blanket and pillow if anything. I always take a stack of muslin cloths and line the bassinet with one of those and then put C in his sleeping bag.

We've just booked Sing - Aussie in June and I had to choose meals for C (infant fare). I picked the child's meal. The options (SIA) were baby meal, post weaning meal and child's meal.

I will still pack snacks and sandwiches and fruit - for a day flight - but will be fun for C to get his "own" food and something else to occupy him
