Topic: Making herself vomit! Posted: 17 September 2007 at 10:00pm |
Does anyone else's kid do this? Lately when Hannah has been getting upset, she has cried and not breathed properly and carried on until she ends up bringing up clear something - bile I guess. It's a horrible habit! What have you done about it? I'm really keen to nip this one in the bud!

Kobe did it all the time, only really stopped in the last 6 months or so. When he was just starting solids he used to gag heaps and would throw up over anything, even a hot chip, somethign really small and since then he has had a shocking gag reflex. Not sure how to stop it though sorry, we just had to ride it out.

Hannah's isn't a reflex, she didn't have trouble with solids, she's just started this recently. It's really come to the surface with having to give her eye drops, she absolutely hates getting them done and will do her little procedure afterwards

Maybe its the taste or smell of the eyedrops.
The vomit reflex will be kicking in cause she's crying so much she's not breathing properly.
Not sure of a solution - maybe a treat of some kind after the eyedrops so she isn't upsetting herself so much.

My sister apparently did this when she tantied about not wanting a nap. Mum just had to ride it out (and it helps not to make a fuss of the vomit or the mess if they're doing it as part of a tantrum).
The clear stuff sounds odd though... I thought bile was green? Could just be saliva - you see kids wretch that up sometimes, even with full bellies.

Probably is saliva, I guess I think it's bile cause it's a little bit thick (it's like egg white?) but that's probably just thickened slightly cause of her ear infection, come to think of it.

My eldest used to make herself sick every time she had a tantrum or if she was hurt or upset. She threw up in a shop when a shop keeper told her off once.
But she actually threw up properly not just bile.
She would start off crying then she would start coughing which would then lead on to reaching. She did this until she was about 4ish. We had no idea what to do about it but her time-out place became the bathroom, tiles are so much easier to clean.
If she got really upset I would sit in front of her and tell her to breath. Keep saying "take a big breath, now let it out" etc etc. This sometimes helped just depended on how worked up she had already got.

Sounds more like saliva than bile... bile is yellow/green and smells bad and it quite watery.
But that's not important... what I really wanted to say is I guess all you can do is trying and avoid situations which lead to her doing that. I vaguely remember kids doing that sort of stuff for attention (not in the manipulative way, but purely because they really did want attention... or to get out of ear drops which is fair enough!)
Hope she finishes the course soon!!

Miya does that and brings up clear stuff like egg white when shes really upset. The plunket nurse said to sit her on our knee and say in a calm voice " breath like mummy see...in...and out" while taking slow deep breaths. This sort of work, more because it distracts her I think.
Super Nanny says as long as they are in a safe place where they can't hurt themselves(in their room or bed) just ignore them and once they are calm just acting like nothing happened clean up the mess and go on like nothing happened no extra cuddles or anything because this would encourage it.
I couldn't handle doing what super nanny says, clearly she doesn't have kids.
I've been doing the breathing thing with Miya and after the the first week she started doing it less and less because she just gets the same boring reaction every time I think.
Mum said I used to get so upset I'd turn purple to get my own way until mum started to ignore me!

Is she doing it on purpose or is it just cause she is upset? Cause it sounds to me like she is working herself and getting so upset that she reacts in a physical way? I would be inclined to sit with her and try to help her to calm.

I don't think she intends to start retching etc, she has only brought up properly once. It's more that she works herself up, in a tanty kind of way, until she starts retching etc. Once we say eyedrops she starts crying etc and I have just been matter of fact, just breathe, it won't take long, get it over and done with as quick as possible attitude. Getting as much fuss but no retching since yesterday, yay!
Nikki - 9 drops per day (over 4 sessions) x 10 days!!

maybe if it is just related to the eyedrops you could see if you could find an alternative medicine or way of administering it. maybe some breast milk instead...

Maya used to do the exact same thing, from when she was about 9 months old and she still does it now when she doesn't get her own way. She gets so upset that she can't control herself and like Anna says it manifests itself in a physical way. When she was small I would go in and change her and the sheets without making eye contact or saying a word, now she knows she has to go to the toilet if she's being sick and I figure if she has enough control to take herself to the toilet to vomit then she's got enough control to stop carrying on like a lunatic so I just ignore it and eventually she calms down.
You're lucky it's just fluid tho, we get food
