Topic: Massey vs Open Polytech - study Posted: 01 November 2009 at 4:53pm |
Has anyone studied with either of these providers extramurally, and how did you find them?
I am looking to possibly start a Bachelor in Business, or something similar, and need to decide which institute would work better for me.

I did my BBS through Massey extramurally and found it good (although I dont have anything to compare it with).
I studied while working fulltime, so it fitted in with my schedule, the resources were concise and easy to understand and I could contact lecturers if I had a problem with the work.

I've studied with both two different courses and Massey was far better than Open Polytech much better support and the contact courses are really good.
Open Polytech were useless took ages to get course material and even longer to get marks back.
Also personally I prefer that Massey is actually a University and the qualifications have a better standing within industries
I've done business course through both PM if you want to know anything about them.
I'm now doing Health Science with Massey, I looked at the Open Poly option but it wasn't as good.

I did some of my BSc through Massey extramural, and agree with the comments above. Found the lecturers easy to contact, and the library service is great.

I studied at Massey for a year (on campus) and enjoyed it. I've heard really good things about their extramural courses. I think you'd find that most people would give more weight to a Massey paper than a Open Poly one when looking at your quals.

I did a year full-time, and a semester part-time through Massey extramural. I was doing a BA. I love Massey but decided I didn't have the motivation for distance study.
The lecturers are really easy to get hold of. The contact courses were well organised and informative (not really essential though for the papers I was doing). The library service was awesome, very prompt and free! Marks always back in the specified time length, and the lecturers were understanding about extensions.
If you want to know anything else feel free to PM.

With Massey you can attend lectures and study extramurally if you want to, obviously you have to live near campus. I've managed to find a tutorial that fits in around work which is awesome.
The Massey online stuff for the BBS is fantastic, I couldn't have passed without it and I got 80% in my assignments.

I agree with everything MrsG said.
I did one course through the Open Polytech about 18 months ago and didn't find any support network or anything with it.
I studied through Massey internally and did 2 or 3 papers over my 3 years extramurally and had heaps of support - the block courses for the papers were fantastic too.
As the others said too - I would definately prefer to employ someone who has qualifications through Massey rather than Open Polytech

mrsg - you did the Valuation and Property Management aspect at one stage didn't you? That is what I am looking at.
I have done study through TOPNZ already, including some this year, and haven't found it too bad, but of course a degree is another level. It sounds like everyone is pretty happy with what Massey offered though!!

Yeah I did, and I also did my real estate cert thru open poly, tbh its not really worth it.
I did 127.241 Real Estate Valuation and Management managed to get a B- mostly cause I flunked the exam.
The contact course was invaluable highly recommend going its also great studying with other extramurals with different work experiences and not fresh 18 year olds.
If you do the valuation paper I've got the text book you can have it if you want.
I was working in the industry at the time and found that really helped with my studies.

Mrsg1 How are you finding Health Science. I'm looking to do it part time next year in Wellington (am going to do the papers that can be cross credited to Nursing should I decide to go down that track). I haven't studied for 20 odd years so I am very daunted about the whole process (sorry to steal the thread minik8e)

Cool as Linda
Bex, is there a way that I can figure out how much EFTS a paper is? I am trying to decide how many Summer School papers to do, and I need at least 0.3 EFTS...

Oh, I can help with that. One EFT = 100 credits. So you'll need to be enrolled in at least 30 credits.
A standard full-time year at Massey is 120 credits, which is a little over one EFT.
You should probably check that with the Massey staff though, just in case - I work at Waikato Uni, so while I'm pretty confident about my info Massey could have tweaked something since I last heard.

I don't start until next year so sorry can't help you. I'll let you know when I do. The major I'm doing can only be done in Palmy, Wellington or Extramurally.

I'm studying with Open Polytechnic now... They are Ok I guess... I gotta admit haven't really done alot. But they are helpful when I ring up.
I'm only doing a basic computer admin course though, pretty much just to keep my mind going for the next wee while

I did one paper through Massey extramurally while I was doing my BCA. They were fab, like the others have said the resources are great and it's all really well organised. If you need help or assistance it's a phone call or an email away. So another thumbs up for Massey!

Kate it also depends on how long the SS semester is. While doing 30 credits does make you FT if the SS semester is les than 12 weeks (I think) then you aren't FT. I used to know all the FT and PT crap but I can't remember it right now. I know a bit about the BBS you want to do so can answer those Q's. And with the FT over SS call SL they will def know about that.
