Topic: Midwives - West Auckland Posted: 19 August 2005 at 9:14am |
I'm expecting my first child next year & am a bit overwhelmed about choosing a midwife. Seems there are so many to choose from! I'm the first of all my friends to have a baby, so can't get any recommendations from them. My doctor said he'll try & get some names from other women at his surgery who've recently had babies, but just wondering if any of you have anyone that you'd recommend?

I"m not from auckland but you can look for registered midwifes in the front of the phone book. You could do like an interview with them, either on the phone or in person. I guess the best way is to see if you "click" with them. If you and the midwife have the same beliefs then, they are properly the best one to go with. If you find after a few months/weeks you dont get on with them you can always change.
Good luck

Maternity Matters in Woodford place Henderson are quite good - had three of my friends including myself go thru them - i'm pregnant with my second child and have returned to my original midwife who has now gone independant.

I was with Maternity matters when I was there - I found the services they offered really good, though both the midwives I had have left now. The best thing to do is to interview two or three different people to see who you like.

Well April must be a popular month because all the midwives I've rung so far are fully booked! Maternity Matters only had a newly qualified student midwife available or a lady who wasn't moving out to NZ until January which wasn't really ideal & Theresa Fergusson is stopping midwifery at the end of the year. So it's back to the phone book. I didn't think it would be this hard!! Wish I'd started looking weeks ago now.

I know my midwife here in Wellington is having to turn people away for April too!! Must really be a busy month, not just in Auckland!

I had the same problems in Hawkes Bay for October. I was trying to find a m/w at about 10 weeks and all the ones I had been recommended were booked solid. Ended up with a new graduate m/w whos backup was one of the recommended ones. We got on really well but she couldnt answer a lot of my questions and had to ask her backup which worried me a little Ended up moving and changing anyway which I am very glad about now.
