Topic: move to big bed before #2 comes? Posted: 12 January 2009 at 12:35pm |
There are heaps of topics on this but I didn't have time to read them all.
Jack is not a very good sleeper, wakes frequently at night (although some of it is due to teething), and often has to be resettled during naps as well. He doesn't self settle either, we are with him till he falls asleep which usually isn't too bad.
So I am not sure whether I should move him to a big bed before #2 arrives mid-July. I think that if I make any changes it should be before the end of March so not too close to baby arriving. Added to this we are trying to sell our house and if successful will move in the next few months.
I don't want to buy another cot so Jack would have to be out of the cot by about Nov I think when baby moves out of the bassinette. I am worried there could possibly be a jealously/possesiveness thing over the cot
What do you think? Should I move him to a bed now or wait till after baby arrives/later this year?

Daniel is younger than Jack and we moved him into a big bed and he sleeps better now with more space. It took about a week of teaching him to stay in his bed but since your preggers this might be easier to do now rather than when you get bigger and more uncomfy

I would leave him but really it is up to you, you know him best! My DS was 21 months when his brother arrived and he stayed in the cot and bubs in the basinette. He now has a very cool winnie the pooh toddler bed and is that little bit older to appreciate being a "big boy". Good luck with whatever you decide!!

I just wish I had a crystal ball as I really want to avoid any jealousy over moving Jack after the baby comes. But in saying that Jack has never got attached to anything, no cuddlies, soft toys etc so maybe there won't be any problems. And with trying to sell the house and all the other things going on it just seems a bit too much for both of us to try. Have I just talked myself out of it?
Maybe I should discuss it with DH, I have been reluctant to until I knew what I wanted because I am sure he will say "I dunno"

You could, and I have done so at a similar time for the same reason, but I'm not sure from your description if he would be ready in March. I don't think it would hurt to move him at the end of August or so, it's still a long time between then and November. The only trouble is that you may not want to physically get two kids up every morning.... but then you might like the toddler confined in the cot until you get him up

My little miss was around 18 months when i moved her to a bed, as she thought it would we be fun to climb out of the cot.
I just pulled it down in front of her and told her it was broken, went to bed that night and didnt get up once.

I'm planning to move Jake before bub arrives in july for the reasons you've described. Also think it will be easier to deal with the initial settling in time (getting out of bed etc) while pregnant than when I have a newborn bub to be getting up to in the night.
But in saying that - Jake is a good sleeper and we are not moving house! In your case I would probably leave it til you've moved, then try.

Yeah, I think I will wait. Spoke to DH about it last night but didn't really get an answer from him

Hi,
we have just moved ds into a big bed because like you we wanted him to be used to the big bed before baby comes, so bub can use the cot. Im finding now the only trouble is he can get out and has been waking in the night and comming into our room, its soo tiring trying to teach him to stay in bed but hopefully if i keep at it he will be sleeping thru the night again before bub is here coz there is noo way id want to be going thru this and having a NB to feed and get back to sleep as well. I say go for it, as you said in your first post you still have a few months before you move so he might get used to it before then.

We bought a bid bed for Dominic when Isobelle arrived but haven't put him in it yet. We have just started giving him the option of having his daytime nap in the big bed but he mostly still wants his cot. The advice I got about making changes in your toddler's life before or with the arrival of #2 was to do it well before or well after #2 arrives so to avoid all the jealousy issues.

Thats sort of what I heard too Saffron, basically don't make any big changes 3mths either side of baby's birth.
We accepted an offer on our house last night and although it is conditional I think we will be moving in the next few months. As that will be a big enough change for Jack I have decided to flag the big bed until after baby is born. Worst case scenario is I have to buy another cot, although it will be hard money-wise it won't be the end of the world

We moved DD into her 'big girl bed' about 2 weeks ago to give plenty of time for adjustment before baby comes at the end of March. She settled really well and fell out once (despite the safety rail being there) but still talks about her special bed. We put up the bed one day when she was at daycare and when she got home made a big deal about her 'special' bed and how she was going to sleep there now.
We've been exceptionally lucky with her staying in her bed. In fact she doesn't get out of bed until one of us goes in to her. I'm not sure if it's because that was what she was used to, or that's what happens at daycare (she's only there 2 days a week though) or if we're just really lucky!!
We have also been lucky with the cot because DD used a cot that Mum had bought when we moved home from Oz and we bought another one when we thought we were moving out. Now the living arrangements have meant that Mum can't fit a cot at her place so we're using the other one we bought so it wasn't DD's anyway.
Linzey, I think if you were to move him now he'd have enogh time to settle before you move. Or you could try just setting up a bed in your new place and making it a special thing for him in the new house. Good luck with what you choose
