Topic: multiple pregnancy Posted: 02 December 2009 at 3:01pm |
hi everyone
Im pregnant with twins and i am wanting to know if anyone has any contact phone numbers for midwives that are experinced in multiples pregnancys. Im 26 weeks and i stay in blockhouse bay. I currently have a midwife but she is not experinced with multiple pregnancys and wish to find a midwife that is. 2 weeks ago i went into hospital with sharp pain in my lower ab and had bleeding and was told that they were signs of a miscarriage. Since then the bleeding has stoped and i no longer have sharp pains in my lower ab, and feel that because of the threatening miscarriage i should be seeing more othen instead of every 4 weeks. I have only seen a specilist once and that was 2 months ago and my midwife said i dont need to see the specilist until im 32 weeks. This is my first pregnancy and im not sure if the midwife i have should be doing more or if im just stressing out about nothing. So if anyone can help with passing on phone numbers or advice it be highly appreciated.

Hi
I would see if you can transfer to a hospital midwife.
On saying that if you post the question above into the 'Twins, triplets or more' topic under First baby or more, i am certain Emma or Emily or even Yvette can answer this as we all live in auckland and have twins.
I'll link this topic into the thread and see if they can help you!
Sorry I can't help myself as was under the high risk team at National Womens with my twins. But def agree you need someone who has experience in twins!! Specially if it's your first pregnancy

Welcome to OhBaby and congratulations! Sounds like it has been a worrying time for you.
I would suggest contacting the midwives at the hospital as i agree with bext1, someone with mutiple birth experience will be important. If you feel worried at all though (in between your midwife appointments) don't hesitate to contact her. Better to put your mind at ease.
All the best

Sorry, we had a specialist right from the beginning. When it came to the delivery, we did have a hospital midwife who specialised in twin delivery but that was about it as far as a midwife specialising in twins. Also agree with Bext1 about contacting hospital midwives

We found out that we were expecting twins at 6 weeks so were with the hospital team right from the get go. I saw my midwife at Green lane but suspect that you would be with the Auckland team? If you have any worries or issues at all you can go in to the Day assessment unit at the Auckland hospital. Has your MW not given you the numbers yet? How far along are you? I have a really bad memory but I don't think I saw my MW that often until I was further along? Then it was like every two weeks from about 32ish weeks. My MW wasn't experienced' with twins, infact the complete opposite but she was a good midwife post natally.
I think the most valuable advice that I recieved during pregancy is to question everything and don't let things go if you feel that you need more care. You know your body the best so if you think you need to be monitored go to the assessment unit. At the end of the day if just hearing the heart beats and being told everything is normal puts you mind to rest then you will be feeling less stressed and will be beneficial.
Congrats on the pregnancy, exciting times to come!

I also question you being told you were "miscarrying" as at 24 weeks (which you would have been at the time) then your babies are "viable" and they should have been monitoring you closely at the time.

Hi,
First of all welcome & CONGRATS!!!!!!!
I haven't read the previous posts but...
When they found out I was having twins my Midwife got straight onto forwarding me onto the Greenlane Hospital Maternity team but then they suspected TTTS so went straight to the high-risk team at Auck Hospital BUT...
Even if they are Fraternal and all fine I'd ask for your midwife to refer you to the Greenlane specialists who deal with standard twin pregnancy's. Be aware that you could be seen be a team of people but that's better than having 1 person who hasn't had experience.
My high-risk hospital midwife was SO LOVELY and definately worth getting in touch just in case she has a clinic outside of the hospital (I'm pretty sure she does). I'll PM you her number and she may be able to point you in the right direction anyway (say hi to her from me .
Let us know how you go, I presume you got a scan after the possible miscarriage to make sure they're both fine?
I'd expect to be seen by a Midwife with frat twins every month or 3 weeks and then every 1 or 2 weeks at 30wks preg.

Ah knew I could count on Auckland Twin Mummies!!
Seems strange now I re-read for them to say you were miscarrying at 24 weeks, have you been having lots of movements? Our boys were born at 28wks 5 days and they were small but healthy. I'm sure by 24 weeks the risk of MC is gone?

thanx everyone for the comments. im having identical twins and im 26 weeks, and the babies kick all the time so thats a good sign. i've been reading a book about multiple pregnancys and it was really good, my antenatel teacher gave it to me to read bcause she new that my midwife didnt know much information about twin pregnancys and wasnt experinced with multiples. now that i have finished the book i know so much more about warning signs for expectant mother of multiples and how much food i shld be eating ect. i feel like i know what to do even if my midwife doesnt know. i know that seeking an experinced midwife is the right thing for me and the babies and so happy that my antenatal teacher was so helpfull about me needed to find an experinced midwife.
at the time they said i could miscarry they told me i had to talk with my midwife about having a scan. she felt like i didnt need to have a scan and that there wasnt anything more she could do for me:( that was two weeks ago. on monday just gone i asked my midwife to refer me to the high risk unit at auckland hospital but she told me that she cant refer me to auckland but she can refer me to north shore bcause auckland wasnt under waitemata. i got realy unset bcause its about what is best for me and my twins not what district auckland hospital was under. she got really mad because i ask to be refered to some else that was experinced with multiples. she said that i would have to look for someone myself if i wanted to go to auckland hospital cause it was in a different district. so i was forced to seek for a new midwife and call a hole bunch of different people just to get a number to someone that was experince with multiples. in the end i left a message for a lady at green lane hospital and told her my story and she was more that willing to help. she got back to me the next day and said that she was able to care for me and will make sure i get the best care for me and my twins:D i was so happy that i chose to go somewhere else bcause my previous midwife told me that twin pregnancys were just like singleton pregnancys just with two. and we all know there nothing easy about multiple pregnancys.
so thanx so much for the help everyone

yay for you! I'm so glad you found a midwife. I had a mw from the greenlane team and she was great. I hope everything works out for you. You old mw seems like a cow, I would complain, that doesn't sound at all like the level of care you can expect from any pregnancy, let alone a high risk multiple!

Wow, I'm glad you got a new midwife sorted, especially with the comment about twin pregnancies being like singleton pregnancies except with two.... Identical twins are far higher risk than singletons because they share a placenta. They're a real blessing though Good luck!!
